Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and experience.
Purpose: The Patient Care Technician (PCT) supports patient care by assisting nurses and physicians with routine tasks and advanced skills. Their duties include helping with daily activities, conducting point-of-care tests, monitoring vital signs, and ensuring patient safety. They also perform advanced procedures like phlebotomy and EKGs as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Suggests and supports departmental changes and quality initiatives.
- Assumes responsibility for assignments and views problems as challenges.
- Demonstrates awareness of behavior on department efficiency.
- Performs core nursing assistant tasks: ADLs, point-of-care testing, weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application, HAC & PSI prevention, simple dressings, restraints, bladder scans, specimen collections, and patient transport.
- Reports equipment malfunctions and communicates effectively with other departments.
- Establishes professional and respectful relationships.
- Contributes to unit activities like responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
- Receives feedback constructively and communicates learning needs.
- Improves knowledge, skills, and performance; participates in self-review.
- Communicates clearly with the healthcare team and understands cultural diversity and workplace safety.
- Provides patient care, assists with therapies, and reports patient status changes.
- Instructs patients and families under RN direction; manages patient restraints.
- Adheres to patient care policies and safety procedures.
- Documents in medical records and completes clerical functions as needed.
- Performs advanced skills like phlebotomy, IV removal, Foley catheter removal, arrhythmia monitoring, 12-lead EKGs, and NG tube management based on department needs.
- Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- 1 year of general healthcare experience, or 6 months experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion, or completion of at least 1 nursing program clinical rotation.
- Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class upon hire. Successful completion of basic information system training.
- Microcomputer experience preferred. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
- Access to medications is limited to distribution to the nurse
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
- Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal within 90 days of hire or transfer
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
- ACLS preferred
