Religious Studies - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (25000344)

The Department of Religious Studies in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, in coordination with the Jewish Studies Program, seeks to appoint a Teaching Assistant Professor with a specialization in modern Israel and a focus on the anthropological study of medicine, food, body image, religion, and culture. The position is outside the tenure stream (appointment stream) and is contingent on the availability of external grant funding.

Required qualifications:

  • the ability to teach courses on modern Israel society and courses on gender, food, and body image, and the relationship of religion generally and Judaism specifically to these issues
  • a PhD in anthropology, religious studies, or a cognate field
  • scholarly work on modern Israel.

Preferred qualifications:

  • previous teaching experience at a public research university in the areas listed above.
  • expertise in the field of medical anthropology.
  • experience with interdisciplinary teaching in fields such as Jewish Studies; Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies; and the Health Humanities.

This is a non-tenure-track position focused on teaching, service, and community/public outreach The normal teaching load will be 4 courses (12 credits) per year, with at least one course each year focused on Israel. The initial term for the contract will be 2 years, with the possibility of renewal contingent on available funding.
