The Assistant Dean for Community Engagement and Inclusive Excellence will engage with low income and other underserved communities in Rhode Island to implement and develop programs and partnerships. Advise on and advocate for inclusive excellence in the College of Health Sciences. Work closely with university stakeholders to help cultivate an academic, working, and living environment that fosters an inclusive people-centered culture at the University of Rhode Island.
Duties and Responsibilities
Community Engagement
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate in college and university committees as appropriate.
Represent the college and university externally on matters pertaining to inclusive excellence.
Perform Additional Responsibilities As Required.
Willingness to travel and work nights and/or weekends when necessary.
Licenses, Tools, And Equipment
Personal computers, printers, and relevant programs and software.

Duties and Responsibilities
Community Engagement
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Engage with low income and other underserved communities in Rhode Island to implement and develop the following four initiatives: / Pipeline programs by engaging with schools and community groups. / Support programs for students who enroll in the College of Health Sciences from these communities. / Partnerships to address health needs in the communities. / Internship programs and clinical placements.
- While the initial focus will be in Rhode Island, future efforts may expand to other states.
- Advise on and advocate for inclusive excellence in the College of Health Sciences.
- Work with faculty and staff to develop, coordinate, and implement programs, initiatives, plans, and partnerships across the College of Health Sciences that focus on inclusive excellence. Develop community building initiatives within the college and with off-campus partners. Plan and host programs to enhance student success.
- Advise and inform the Dean and other College of Health Sciences leadership on all current issues and best practices.
- In coordination with the College of Health Sciences leadership and inclusive excellence related committees, define areas in need of attention and/or support, and recommend policy changes or other approaches to address the needs.
- Lead and engage the College of Health Sciences in training and professional development.
- Support efforts to recruit, develop, retain and support a diverse community in the college of health sciences, including students, faculty and staff.
- Work alongside URI Office of Equal Opportunity and University leadership, including Human Resources, Community, Equity and Diversity, and other offices/programs to identify evidence-based practices in recruitment, retention, and promotion of a diverse, engaged workforce. This may include serving as the Outreach Coordinator for faculty or staff searches, responsible for leading efforts to increase the representation of underrepresented groups in the applicant pool.
- Work closely with the Office of Community, Equity and Diversity (CED) and other university entities to help cultivate an academic, working, and living environment that fosters an inclusive people-centered culture at the University of Rhode Island.
- Attend monthly meetings convened by the Assistant Vice President of CED. Shared support resources to address common goals and challenges.
- Serve on University Diversity Council (UDC). Attend bi-monthly council meetings. Share best practices across academic and administrative units. Evaluate collective progress toward Focus URI KPIs. Coordinate inclusion enhancing activities to increase impact and eliminate silos.
- Serve on Inclusive Excellence Awards Committee.
- Chair or serve on at least one other UDC work group, task force, committee.

Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree.
- Minimum of five years of community engagement and/or inclusive excellence professional experience.
- Demonstrated experience and dedication to enhancing community inclusiveness.
- Demonstrated experience in community engagement and community-based programs.
- Demonstrated experience leading inclusive excellence initiatives (i.e., justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, community building and strategic partnerships) in higher education, private industry, non-profit, and/or government institutions.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with decision makers and stakeholders at multiple levels.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of institutions/agencies.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
- Demonstrated experience and dedication to ensuring equity for underrepresented or marginalized groups.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a confidential and sensitive environment.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in higher education.
- Demonstrated fluency in Spanish.
- Demonstrated experience with identifying and mitigating issues and barriers associated with recruitment and retention of individuals from underrepresented groups.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of scholarly research and/or best practices regarding inclusive excellence.
- Demonstrated active participation in relevant professional associations (e.g., NADOHE, AAC&U, APLU, NASPA, AAAED, CUPA, etc.)
