Start Date: Fall 2025

The University of Rhode Island is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Psychology with expertise in clinical research, particularly focusing on treatment processes and outcomes for common mental and behavioral health issues. This position will support a new Master’s program in Mental and Behavioral Health Counseling, a non-thesis professional degree (https://web.uri.edu/psychology/academics/ms-in-mbhc/). The successful candidate will contribute to this Master’s program and our APA-accredited Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology through teaching, clinical research, and service to the university and community. Candidates should show clear evidence of research productivity along with the potential to develop an independent program of research and a significant commitment to teaching, supervision, and mentorship at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

We seek a scientist-practitioner with a commitment to evidence-based practices and associated clinical supervision. The content area of clinical interest and research is open, but candidates’ work should align with existing departmental strengths, including behavior change, health equity, substance use, trauma, child anxiety, parenting, and resilience in mental and behavioral health problems. Candidates with interests in any area of child, adolescent, or adult psychopathology or psychological treatment (including digital technologies for assessment and intervention) are encouraged to apply.

The Clinical Psychology Program has an “in house” community-based Psychological Consultation Center (PCC) that affords the opportunity for clinical practice, supervision, and research. The PCC has state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment for live observation, live-streaming, and recording of therapy sessions in each of our six clinic rooms and a wealth of treatment outcome data available for analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct clinical research on treatment process and/or outcomes for common mental and behavioral health issues. Obtain external funding, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and present findings at academic and professional conferences.
  • Contribute to the department’s mission of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in clinical research, teaching, and supervision.
  • Teach graduate-level courses to students in the Master’s program in Mental and Behavioral Health Counseling and the APA-accredited Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology.
  • Supervise graduate students in clinical practice, including individual and group therapy work.
  • Teach relevant undergraduate courses, such as Introduction to Psychopathology.
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students, fostering professional and academic growth.
  • Engage in service to the department, college, and university through committee participation and other program development activities.

Qualifications

  • Licensed or license-eligible as a Psychologist in Rhode Island.
  • Demonstrated expertise in clinical research with a focus on treatment processes and/or outcomes.
  • Experience in providing clinical supervision, with proficiency in empirically supported treatments (e.g., CBT, ACT, DBT, and/or other third-wave therapies).
  • A strong research agenda with the potential for external funding.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, teaching, clinical practice, and service.
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written communication skills.

Preferred

  • Experience in teaching and supervising group therapy theory and practice.
  • Experience in training and mentoring graduate students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Expertise in areas of clinical interest that complement departmental strengths (e.g., behavior change, substance use, trauma, child mental health, parenting, resilience in mental and behavioral health disorders).
