Basic Function
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs and serving as a key member of the Student Affairs Leadership team, the Assistant Vice President is responsible for supporting the Vice President in providing leadership oversight, planning, and management responsibilities in the Division of Student Life and serving as the Director of the Memorial Union. The Assistant Vice President provides oversight of units: Memorial Student Union, Center for Student Leadership Development, Greek Life, and recognized Student Involvement Organizations, including Student Senate. The Assistant Vice President provides primary leadership for Division Engagement and Assessment planning efforts and represents the Division on task forces, continuous improvement teams and councils/standing committees and manages other special projects as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Develop and implement a comprehensive student engagement strategy aligned with the institution’s mission and goals, identifying key areas for improvement and prioritizing initiatives to enhance student experience.
Oversee the development and execution of leadership training programs for student leaders within organizations, focusing on skills like communication, conflict resolution, and event planning.
Oversee the development of programs, activities, and events that promote student success, involvement, and engagement with the broader campus community.
Provide guidance and support to student organizations, facilitating their operations, promoting inclusivity, and ensuring adherence to policies and procedures as well as the student handbook and collaborating with Community Standards.
Lead the planning and execution of major campus events, including family weekend, student recognition ceremonies, and other significant traditions.
Collaborate with academic departments, student affairs divisions, and other campus units to integrate student engagement initiatives into the broader curriculum and student life experience.
Utilize data to measure the effectiveness of student engagement programs, identify trends, and make data-driven adjustments to improve outcomes.
Champion initiatives promoting inclusive excellence within student organizations and campus events, ensuring all students feel welcomed and represented.
Advocate for student needs and concerns, working with administration to address challenges and implement supportive policies.
Lead and mentor a team of student engagement professionals, including coordinators and advisors, providing guidance and support for their work.
Communicate with the University master schedule of events to promote and enhance student engagement, guide and direct additional efforts and technologies that facilitate the scheduling of all student activities, events and programs.
Ensure fiduciary compliance of Memorial Union, Center for Student Leadership Development, all student organizations including Greek Life and promote the development of student organization fiscal responsibility.
Provide supervision and direction for building operations, maintenance, purchasing, inventories, facility management, construction, and space allocation.
Ensure best practices in the retail, revenue-producing operations, (e.g., banking facilities, optical shop, hair salon, etc.) and coordinate the integration of services designed to serve for the University community (e.g., Dining Services, Campus Stores) in the Memorial Union.
Other Duties And Responsibilities
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Licenses, Tools, And Equipment
Personal computers and printers, Microsoft Office Suite, word processing, database management, spreadsheet software, Learning Management Systems, and Google Suite.

Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel or a related, applied social science field.
- Minimum of eight years of Student Affairs experience in positions of increasing responsibility.
- Minimum of five years of student engagement/involvement experience in higher education.
- Demonstrated experience with auxiliary/enterprise budgeting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and its application to student engagement and student success.
- Demonstrated experience in student development/engagement programming.
- Demonstrated experience in staff and asset management.
- Demonstrated experience in financial and facility planning and evaluation.
- Demonstrated strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
- Demonstrated organizational skills.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret institution policies, plans, objectives, rules and regulations and communicate the interpretation to others.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and present detailed studies and reports to include recommendations concerning the substance of the studies and reports.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver oral presentations before small, medium and large groups of people.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate degree in counseling, higher education, management or related field.
- Demonstrated experience with student leadership.
- Demonstrated experience in Greek Life.
