Description
The University of Rochester Medical Center’s Department of Family Medicine (DFM) is seeking an exceptional and innovative scholar to lead the Family Medicine Research Division (FMRD) as Director of Research.
Research within the Department of Family Medicine includes themes of communication related to health and healthcare, healthcare equity, nutrition, clinician well-being, and implementation research to advance equity and value in primary care. Our department is one of the longest standing family medicine departments in the US, a pioneer in the operationalization of the Biopsychosocial Model and the integration of behavioral science into primary care. Our foci include clinician self-awareness and well-being, communication skills training, and community partnerships, with a mission to address health and healthcare disparities. Our research often addresses inequities in health and access to healthcare by focusing on conditions such as hypertension, HIV/AIDS, cancer, and palliative care. We also focus on overweight/obesity and Deaf health research. Our close inter-institutional collaborations include eight clinical and non-clinical departments in an institution that values interdepartmental and interprofessional work, as well as Centers and Institutes such as the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), the Center for Community Health and Prevention (CCHP), the Wilmot Cancer Institute (WCI), the Office for Health Equity Research (OHER), and the National Center for Deaf Health Research (NCDHR).
The position is full-time, with rank and salary commensurate with education and experience.
We seek a candidate that is a nationally/internationally respected researcher who has led and maintained an externally funded research program. Demonstrated experience as a research mentor is required. Expertise in research administration is desired, but not mandatory.
Position Overview: Director of Research
The Director of Research will also serve as a resource for research methodology, research project planning, interdisciplinary collaborations and team science, and champion training and equity. This individual will mentor junior faculty, trainees, and students to ensure sound project planning, execution, data analysis, and publication of results. They will work closely with faculty to develop research plans and proposals with an emphasis on future external funding through the identification of funding sources, grant workshops, and collaborative research opportunities.
This individual will provide leadership in the following areas:
- Strategic direction of the Family Medicine Research Programs, in conjunction with departmental leadership
- Mentoring of research faculty and supporting them in research skill development
- Assisting in creating opportunities for DFM clinicians to develop research skills
- Recruitment, retention, and oversight of research staff
- Development, maintenance, and circulation of research reports.
- Service on key committees within and outside the department
- Facilitating appropriate joint appointments with other departments across the University
Qualifications
- MD, DO, PhD, or equivalent degree with formal training or credentials in a relevant discipline
- Investigators with research foci on health equity and/or dissemination and implementation of interventions to improve health are strongly encouraged to apply
- An actively funded research program in basic, translational, or clinical research
- A record of scholarly achievement and funding capabilities appropriate to the applicant’s seniority and professional experience
- Experience in mentoring trainees and/or junior faculty
- Exceptional organizational and interdisciplinary communication skills for work within and across departments, and with external collaborators
- Demonstrated commitment to recruitment, development, and retention of women and other populations underrepresented in health research

The referenced pay range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the base range of compensation for this faculty position. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on (but not limited to) market data, experience and expertise of the individual, and with consideration to related position salaries. Alignment of clinical incentive-based compensation may also be applicable and will be discussed during the hiring process.
