Responsibilities
Eligible for Recruitment/Retention Bonus as follows for new hires:$2,500 paid with the first payroll$2,500 paid at the one-year anniversary$5,000 paid at two-year anniversary
Evaluates and screens cytological preparations for the diagnosis of cancer and other tissue abnormalities; performs microscopic evaluation of cytological specimens, both gynecologic and non-gynecologic, correlating clinical information with morphologic findings to make a final diagnosis on negative gynecological specimens; renders a microscopic assessment on abnormal gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens pending final interpretation by a pathologist; reports results accurately and observes professional discretion with patient information; conducts a systematic microscopic examination of slides to determine the normality or abnormality of cells; marks areas in which abnormal cells are detected and confers with a pathologist on those found to be abnormal; processes gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens as assigned; prepares specimens for microscopic examination involving fixing smears, dehydrating, staining, counterstaining, cleaning, and attaching cover glass to slides; prepares solutions, stains and necessary materials required for testing and evaluation; assists in the preparation of reports summarizing laboratory QC activities, such as daily Pap and Diff Quik stain microscopic check of stain quality and suggesting adjustments if needed; sets up apparatus and equipment used in performing the various test procedures; trains other laboratory personnel and pathology residents in the testing and evaluation procedures of cytotechnology; responsible for issuing a final diagnostic report on gynecologic cases (Pap tests) that are classified as negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy (NILM); responsible for obtaining clinical histories, when necessary, which may include telephone consultation with appropriate physicians or medical professionals; responsible for knowledge of laboratory information system to enter diagnoses and obtain diagnostic information; assists and directs other medical personnel in the collection of cytologic specimens; performs immediate adequacy assessments as assigned; screens special stains slides as assigned, e.g. microorganism stains; documents specimen integrity by verifying patients’ and specimens’ information; maintains effective laboratory operations by adhering to standards of specimen collection, preparation, and laboratory safety; participates in continuing education activities; maintains compliance with CLIA 88 including enrollment and successful annual completion of a federally approved proficiency testing program; participates in laboratory QI projects as assigned; accessions and processes and screens/scores image analysis cases on the instrument as assigned; screens and photographs ISH cases as assigned; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; performs related duties as required.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in a physical or natural science from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama. Registry with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
