What are the responsibilities and job description for the UT Promise Program Manager position at University of Tennessee, Knoxville?
UT Promise is a student success program that places service and mentorship as the core tenets of an engaged undergraduate student experience. The inaugural UT Promise Program Manager will lead the program’s mission and play a central role in shaping the strategic direction to scale this program’s efforts. This position will oversee academic and career integration interventions as well as community engagement and mentorship offerings for the UT Promise cohort. This work involves frequent collaboration with the Academic Success Center and the Center for Career Development & Academic Exploration to ensure seamless student support services and is intended to have a direct impact on university-wide efforts to enhance retention, progression, and graduation rates. A commitment to data-informed decision making will be crucial in working proactively to facilitate positive student outcomes. Evening and weekend work is required for events and programming.
Program Development & Strategy:
- Work with Associate Vice-Provost for Student Success to establish program goals and outcomes in alignment with divisional & University priorities.
- Develop and implement programs that facilitate success and wellbeing for male-identifying, low SES, first-generation, and/or rural students attending UTK.
- Oversee communication and marketing strategies for the entire program, including prospective and continuing student needs as well as social media presence.
- Monitor student progress and program outcomes to provide regular status reports to DSS leadership.
- Stay abreast of emerging trends in the field of student success and pivot functions to meet those trends.
Service Learning & Engagement:
- Partner with university and community partners including Student Life and the Jones Center for Leadership and Service to connect students with opportunities to complete required service hours.
- Ensure appropriate tracking and documentation is in place for all service experiences to meet UT Promise requirements.
- Contribute to cross-collaborative efforts with DSS colleagues to plan and execute signature divisional events for ongoing student engagement programming, such as Fall Kick Off and Graduation Celebration.
Mentorship:
- Partner with university and community partners, including the UT Alumni Association and UT System office, to facilitate matching students with UT Promise mentors aligned with their personal and professional goals.
- Ensure appropriate tracking and documentation is in place for all required mentorship meetings to meet UT Promise requirements.
- Develop and deliver effective, strengths-based peer led activities designed to cultivate student goal setting, self-efficacy and self-advocacy in the post-secondary environment.
Academic & Career Integration:
- Collaborate with the Academic Success Center and the Center for Career Development & Academic Exploration to provide access to regular academic and career coaching sessions for this cohort.
- Partner to deliver workshops and programming specific to this community’s interests and needs.
- Support students’ efforts to identify deep engagement experiences in undergraduate research, education abroad, or work-based learning.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree
- Experience: A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years relevant experience in higher education student support services; or equivalent experience working with college-aged populations in non-profit management, community engagement or public administration OR a master's degree from an accredited institution with a minimum of three years relevant experience in higher education student support services; or equivalent experience working with college-aged populations in non-profit management, community engagement or public administration
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of higher education and the challenges faced by students who have attended under-resourced schools, who are first-generation to college, from low SES backgrounds, and/or populations underrepresented in higher education. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to build consensus with external partners, deliver presentations, and engage with diverse stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Master’s degree
- Experience: A master's degree from an accredited institution with a minimum of three years’ relevant experience with academic advising, academic/career coaching or counseling. Experience designing and/or executing events for an academic, social or career mentorship program, such as SSS, GearUp, Skills USA or Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Experience executing service-learning initiatives.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Strong analytical skills and experience in using data to inform decision-making and assess program effectiveness; Demonstrated success in establishing and deepening partnerships with key campus, high school, and community-based organizations and community stakeholders; Experience designing and/or executing events for an academic, social, or career mentorship program, such as SSS, GearUP, Skills USA, or Big Brothers/Big Sisters; Experience designing and/or executing service-learning programs.
