The Director of Campus Safety & Security is responsible for directing the university’s safety and security efforts, emergency management, and coordinating with local authorities to provide a safe, secure, and orderly environment for the campus community and visitors.
- What We’re Looking For: A subject-matter expert in the field of safety and security who is committed to building a strong campus safety department
- A relational and collaborative leader who values building and enhancing relationships with students, faculty, and staff, including working closely and collaborating with campus stakeholders
- Experience developing and implementing long-term goals, operational policies and procedures, and training programs
- A skilled communicator who is comfortable with public speaking and has experience delivering programming and working closely with students, faculty, and staff on training and education
- Experience developing, planning, and directing campus safety operations
- Experience in Emergency Management response
- Experience with effectively managing a departmental operations budget
- Ability to manage and lead a dynamic campus safety organization, including managing compliance with Federal and State law compliance requirements
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
Operations
- Responsible for the daily operational leadership of the Campus Safety & Security Office
- Serves as the primary campus Incident Commander in emergencies
- Responsible for enforcement of campus policies and procedures, and ensures compliance with applicable regulations relating to safety, security, and emergency management
- Oversees command and coordination, including
- Coordinating with local law enforcement and emergency management
- Ensuring local law enforcement receives accurate crime statistics and data
- Assists with special event and athletic planning
- Oversees administration of the campus security systems and alarms
- Provides leadership to the campus parking and campus access control operations
- Communicates with and provides regular updates to members of the campus’s senior leadership team
- Serves as a subject matter expert for campus safety and emergency management
- Manages the campus emergency alert system and distributes alerts as needed
- Oversees preparation of and reviews various compliance reports (Clery, TIBRS, Emergency Management, etc.)
- Prepares budgetary justifications and recommendations
- Reviews and creates campus policies relating to safety, security, and emergency management
- Establishes training and development for the department and staff
- Develops and implements departmental goals
- Hires, assigns, and manages personnel
- Meets with faculty, staff, and students to discuss campus safety, security, and emergency management
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of experience/ education working in or leading a public Safety/Security office.
- Five years of experience leading a public safety or security office or five years in a command position at a law enforcement agency
- Knowledge of the National Incident Management system and the ability to form partnerships with external agencies to manage and react to emergency situations properly
- The ability to perform duties exceptionally well in high-stress situations
- The ability to manage budgets, personnel, and to successfully run the day-to-day operations of the Campus Safety & Security office
- Excellent organizational skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to communicate professionally and effectively to all stakeholders
- A master’s degree and/or advanced professional certifications
- Experience working in higher education
- NIMS training and experience working with and creating Emergency Management protocols
