Teaching Assistant Professor, June 2025

The Department of Public Health is hiring a twelve-month, non-tenure-track Teaching Assistant Professor. The primary responsibility is to lead the planning and development of a future fully online (distance education) Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) degree program, including online course development, teaching (in-person and online), and program planning. Additionally, this position will coordinate and serve as a department resource for an adjunct faculty member who teaches the undergraduate public health internship course.

The position begins on June 1, 2025, and islocated in Knoxville, Tennessee . Relocation to Knoxville is necessary. This is a five-year appointment, with an option to renew based on performance and annual reviews. Responsibilities :

Teaching (80% effort) : Develop and teach fully online undergraduate public health courses and in-person courses, based on your area of expertise and department needs. Coordinate undergraduate public health internship course (PUBH 489 Practice Experience) and serve as a resource and point of contact for the adjunct 489 course instructor. Teaching load is 3 courses in the fall semester, 3 in the spring semester, and 1 in the summer semester.

Service & Administration (20% effort) : Collaborate with BSPH and MPH program directors and the Office of Digital Learning to spearhead the development of a new distance education (DE) undergraduate degree in public health. Serve on relevant committees, including the Undergraduate Public Health (UG PH) committee. Evaluate and report on student learning outcomes for accreditation (CEPH, SACSCOC) and VolCore Applied Oral Communications. Assist with student recruiting, advising, career development events, alumni and employer outreach, and other duties as assigned.

Research (0% effort) : Research is not required. Although, as an R1 institution, research is welcome and encouraged. In this particular role, research that supports teaching and service contributions would be particularly useful.

Department :

The Department of Public Health is one of eight departments within the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (CEHHS). The department is home to 16 faculty members and 3 staff members. Ours is a growing department, providing public health training and education at the undergraduate, MPH, and PhD levels. Our MPH has over 50 years of CEPH accreditation, and our newer BSPH and PhD programs are also CEPH-accredited. The department offers CEPH-accredited programs, including one undergraduate major (BSPH) with a concentration in Population Health Sciences (~120 majors), an undergraduate public health minor (~300 minors), two Accelerated programs, a Master of Public Health (MPH) program (Distance Education and Campus-based format) with five MPH concentrations, and a PhD program in Health Sciences.

The successful candidate for this position will have an earned doctoral degree, preferably in public health or a related field and teaching experience with different modalities (online and in-person).
