The Mathematics Department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking outstanding educators to contribute to its teaching mission by filling multiple Teaching Assistant Professor / Lecturer positions, set to begin on August 1, 2025. These are non-tenure track, nine-month, full-time teaching positions.
Teaching Assistant Professors / Lecturers possess voting rights within the department and are supervised by both the Associate Department Head for General Math Education and the Department Head. There is a well-defined promotion ladder from Teaching Assistant Professor / Lecturer (up to 3-year appointment) to Teaching Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer (3-year appointment) to Teaching Professor / Distinguished Lecturer (5-year appointment). Teaching Assistant Professors / Lecturers are also eligible to teach during the summer and receive the highest priority for these additional teaching opportunities. Teaching Assistant Professors / Lecturers, Teaching Associate Professors / Senior Lecturers, and Teaching Professors / Distinguished Lecturers in the Mathematics Department at the University of Tennessee are an integral part of the educational mission of the university. They contribute to pedagogically innovative teaching / learning and hold a variety of service roles within the Department, College, and Campus, including participation in the University Faculty Senate. Several Teaching Associate Professors / Senior Lecturers and Teaching Professors / Distinguished Lecturers are involved in the professional development of graduate teaching assistants as part of the departmental Graduate Student Teaching Advising Program. Others network with Math Instructors from other institutions through the MAA CoMInDS project. Outstanding Teaching Professors with a PhD in mathematics may have the opportunity to teach and mentor students as part of the department’s distinctive online Master of Mathematics (MM) program, which is designed for working high school teachers.

A PhD in Mathematics or a related area (including Mathematics Education) is required for consideration of Teaching Assistant Professor positions. A Master’s Degree in Mathematics (not Mathematics Education) is required for consideration of Lecturer positions.
