Summary: Plans, implements, and manages education/outreach activities for the Centennial Museum & Chihuahuan Desert Gardens

Description: Under the direction and supervision of the Museum Director, the Education/Outreach Curator is responsible for coordinating and administering dynamic, educational programs to reach diverse audiences and enhance the mission of the Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens.

Essential Functions

Works with teams led by the Curator of Collections and Exhibitions to develop exhibit interactives, educational curriculum, and interpretive programming for both permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Schedules group tours, classes, and workshops for UTEP students and faculty, K-12 schools, and other organizations.

Plans, implements, and manages adult programming for the UTEP community and the binational region. Examples may include lecture series, panel discussions, film/book discussions, etc.

Works closely with the binational community to create, administrate, and promote educational and outreach programs to community groups.

Develops comprehensive marketing strategies for all programs and works with other team members to publicize their activities.

Develops methods for evaluation of programs success, making adjustments as appropriate.

Works with other departments at UTEP to ensure educational access to students, faculty, and staff.

Works with teams led by the Botanical Curator of the Chihuahuan Desert Gardens to develop educational programs for diverse audiences.

Recruits, trains, and manages volunteers for all programs.

Coordinates volunteer recognition activities.

Maintains all program-related equipment, supplies and educational materials.

Prepares written materials and accompanying photos for newsletters, e-news blasts, and social media.

Participates in community activities which heighten the awareness of university programs.

Helps Curator of Collections and Exhibitions to write and edit exhibit text and otherwise curate temporary exhibitions, permanent exhibits, and signage for the Chihuahuan Desert Gardens.

Other duties as assigned.

Educational/Programming Responsibilities:

Develops and maintains positive relationships with the community, such as the public school system, parents and children, students and teachers, docents, donors and potential donors, and colleagues in the field of education.

Works with other Museum staff to write grant proposals and other funding requests to support educational programs and activities.

Maintains necessary documentation of program participation and demographic data as needed for reporting requirements.

Works with Institutional Advancement to share the Museum’s mission with patrons and donors at museum events.

Works with local media including print, radio and TV to actively promote participation in educational programing.

Possesses basic knowledge about the TEKS — Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills — state standards, in relation to the Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Regularly reports program activities and accomplishments to Museum Director.

Works with Museum Director and other staff to design, update and implement departmental policies and procedures.

Supervises the education budget, including monthly review, mid-year forecasting, and fiscal- year budget planning.

Monitors grant funds and expenditures, and maintains necessary records.

Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems.

Complies with all State and University policies.

Attends staff and programming meetings.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises volunteers, work-studies, and interns; Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Qualifications


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Required Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree from four year college or university.

and

Experience: Five years of related experience to the statement of duties and responsibilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree

Bilingual (English/Spanish)
