Salary Range: $40,000 - $50,000/annualized with flexibility, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Hours: up to 40 hours per week, exempt.

Essential Functions

Job Summary

The Office of Donor Engagement seeks a graphic designer to support UTSA's fundraising efforts by creating compelling visual communications across a variety of print and digital media. As a member of the Advancement & Alumni Engagement Strategic Communications team, the Graphic Designer II/III will work collaboratively to produce designs that will be used to present funding opportunities to donors and prospects. Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Core Responsibilities
  • Work with the Sr. Director of Strategic Communications to produce graphic designs that are in alignment with UTSA branding and effectively convey the philanthropic and campaign brand of the university.
  • Design donor proposals, impact reports, marketing collateral, event invitations, social media graphics, e-communication designs, video graphics, signage, executive presentations, and designs for swag items.
  • Work closely with the Sr. Director, project managers, writers, and clients to understand communication requirements and target audience, identify design products needed, determine most appropriate mediums, develop product timelines, and create cost-effective products that will present the desired message and image most clearly.
  • Effectively communicate visual design concepts to all stakeholders; create digital mock-ups and presentations.
  • Have a conscious approach to align design, visuals, and messages across all mediums and in alignment with university and campaign brands.
  • Provide high-level guidance on design and publishing technology, services for web design, or expertise on printing and other production processes for final products.
  • Work with writers, photographers, and videographers for cohesive project planning and execution.
  • Develop, cultivate and maintain internal communications networks within the department and the University community. Work with University Communications and Marketing to create a uniform image for university-wide philanthropy campaign efforts.
  • Stay up-to-date with the university's priorities, including fundraising needs among all colleges and programs.
  • Embody marketing and fundraising industry best practices and stay up-to-date on trends in philanthropy communications.
  • Collaborate and communicate with project collaborators to ensure deadlines for print projects are met, prepare final design for production.
  • Work with print shops and mail houses for projects that need to be printed and/or mailed, and guide clients through the process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Graphic Designer II
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Two years of experience as a graphic designer in a design group or advertising agency with emphasis on the printed media and some exposure to non-printed media.

Graphic Designer III
  • Bachelor's degree in Graphics, Design, Advertising, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience as a graphic designer in a design group or advertising agency with an emphasis on printed media and some exposure to non-printed media.
  • An online portfolio demonstrating your typography, composition, design, photoshop, and/or illustration skills. Design must be professional and producible.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience as a graphic designer supporting Strategic Communications initiatives in higher education.
  • Solid understanding of traditional offset printing and digital printing and what the difference is to the final product. This includes but is not limited to: a deep understanding of printing techniques and options, paper sourcing, file preparation and ability to press check high-level printed material.
  • Marketing campaign experience.
  • Familiarity with photography.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop).
  • Effective judgment, tact, diplomacy, and discretion are required in all matters.
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of professionals, administrators, and support staff.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing needs and to take design direction and positively respond to feedback.
  • Ability to maintain home office to telecommute as needed.

Working Conditions
  • Office environment.
  • Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions, or other business-related events.
  • Occasional after-hours and weekend work or overtime may be required.

Physical Demands:
  • Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required, only occasionally.
  • Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.

This position will require working both remotely in Texas and on campus (approximately five or more days on campus per month). Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments.
