What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bioinformatics Analyst - BMR Section 21 position at University of Texas at Tyler Health Science Center?
JOB SUMMARY:
The Bioinformatics Analyst is responsible for providing advanced bioinformatics support. This position requires a strong commitment to biomedical research and a strong background in nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, biostatistics, or in a similar background, and will contribute to studies that use microbial genomic data to explore pathogen virulence. In addition, experience with ‘-omic’ platforms specifically high-throughput bulk and single-cell expression data to explore the host molecular pathways to infections to elucidate the genetic and functional basis of infectious disease-host interaction pathways.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS:
- Proven experience writing custom scripts and using standard bioinformatics tools, packages, algorithms, and databases to analyze high-throughput genetic, genomic, and RNAseq data.
- Experience analyzing data using high-performance computing.
- Knowledge of mycobacteria genomics, analyses of pan, core, and accessory genomes.
- Demonstrates fluency in programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Perl, Java).
- Familiarity with statistical analytical concepts and methods.
- Experience in identifying genetic variants (SNPs, insertions, deletions, copy number variants, structural variants) of bacteria (NTM) to study genetic causes of disease.
- Experience with short and long read whole genome and amplicon sequencing data. Map large volumes of sequence information to known genomes or de novo assembly of sequence reads for unknown genomes. Ability to annotate genomic variation and then compute their contribution and association to the process of interest.
- Tractable experience in project development/management and ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, both in a collaborative team and independently.
- Other duties as assigned.
ACCOMPANYING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES:
- Ability to manage work and time effectively by creating project timelines and projects’ immediate priorities while showing adaptability to pivot when adjustments when needed.

- Ability to cooperate with others within and across departments to achieve shared goals; values the contributions of others and treats others with dignity and respect.
- Shows concern for all aspects of the job and sets for themselves high standards of rigor.
REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
- Ph.D. in Bioinformatics or related field.
- Completion of Postdoctoral Fellowship in related field preferred.
- Three (3) years of applied experience in next generation sequencing analyses, bioinformatics, biostatistics, machine learning, computational bioscience or related field is required.
- Experience in microbial bioinformatics preferred.
- Past experience and understanding in the laboratory preferred.
- Strong record of publications.
- May accept a combination of education and experience.
