JOB SUMMARY:
The Research Assistant or Research Associate will support and oversee laboratory operations. Our research focuses on identifying novel therapeutic strategies to combat multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, conducting physiologic antimicrobial susceptibility testing incorporating host immune and environmental factors, and investigating host-pathogen interactions, including bacterial virulence factors.
The Research Assistant or Research Associate will be responsible for conducting microbiological and molecular biology experiments, managing laboratory operations, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory protocols.
The Research Assistant or Research Associate role will be filled according to the education, technical skills, direct relevant research experience, and qualifications of the selected candidate. Refer to Required Education and Experience.
This position may require work beyond normal working hours, including weekends.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS:
- Perform microbiological and molecular biology experiments, including bacterial culture, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, PCR, and gene expression analysis.
- Develop and optimize physiologic antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods.
- Assist in investigating bacterial virulence mechanisms and host-pathogen interactions.
- Collect, record, and analyze experimental data, ensuring accuracy and reproducibility.
- Assist in writing research reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
- Train and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in laboratory techniques and safety protocols.
- Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations, ensuring an efficient and organized workspace.
- Maintain and manage laboratory supplies, inventory, and ordering of reagents, media, and consumables.
- Ensure compliance with biosafety and laboratory safety protocols, including BSL-2 guidelines.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, coordinate servicing and repairs, and ensure proper calibration of instruments.
- Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for lab protocols.
- Manage laboratory records, including reagent databases, inventory logs, and experimental documentation.
- Assist in preparing and submitting regulatory documents, grant applications, and progress reports.

- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to multitask and manage laboratory operations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Previous experience in a research laboratory, particularly in antimicrobial resistance or host-pathogen interactions.
- Experience with lab management, inventory control, and ordering laboratory supplies.
- Knowledge of biosafety and regulatory requirements for laboratory operations.
REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
RESEARCH ASSISTANT
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience with microbiological techniques, including bacterial culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing preferred.

- Master’s degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field.
