JOB SUMMARYSupervises, directs and guides nursing care and performance of duties / task necessary to provide high quality care according to the policies and the procedures, philosophy and objectives of the hospital. This includes clinical, human resources, and financial management.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS
- Accountable for the quality of patient care delivered through others on his / her shift and for day-to-day leadership and direction of staff, while supporting and actualize the goals of the department, hospital, and university
- Assists in staffing the hospital. Manages personnel effectively and analyzes workload and skill requirement to meet care needs for assigned shift.
- Maintains a physical presence within the patient care areas, making daily patient rounds, and responding to requests for assistance and guidance.
- Performs some or all of the following activities : training employees; employee development; mentoring; counseling; performance valuations; handling employee complaints and grievances; and discipline.
- Facilitates a cooperative team effort among all staff.
- Participates in quality improvement and may participate on department and / or institutional committees.
- Ensures the effective delivery of competent, compassionate, and efficient care by monitoring and evaluating patient care processes and outcomes on the patient care units.
- Enhances the overall effectiveness and efficiency of patient care.
- Ensures staff assigned to specific patient care areas meet basic competencies as outlined by specific departmental policies and procedures.
- Works with managers to assure staff meet basic competencies.
- Utilizes other resource agencies and facilities for patient referral when appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned.ACCOMPANYING KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES
- EMR experience preferred.
- Bilingual a plus.
- Standard patient care equipment, supplies and mechanical devices for a selected patient population.
- Standard hospital / clinic related office equipmentMINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
- Associate's degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing school.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
- Five (5) years acute nursing experience with at least two (2) years' experience functioning as a charge nurse, head nurse or nursing supervisor preferred.
- One (1) year critical care.REQUIRED LICENSES / CERTIFICATION
- Current RN license to practice in the state of Texas.
- Must possess and maintain a current American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification.
