Position Number: 116580 Position Title (Classification Title): Law Enforcement Officer 116580 Working Title: Law Enforcement Officer Job Summary: The Law Enforcement Officer carries out campus law enforcement and security/safety functions involved in the protection of life and property, preservation of the peace, prevention of crime, and rendering of services to the University community. The incumbent enforces laws at the university; provides security for administrative and other buildings, parking areas, dormitories, and other campus facilities. Duties also include preliminary investigations, writing reports, enforcing traffic laws and parking regulations, investigating traffic accidents, handling suspicious or irregular conditions, and the apprehension and arrest of criminal violators. Work in this position is performed under the supervision of a Law Enforcement Corporal and Sergeant. Department University Police FLSA: Non-Exempt Minimum Qualifications: Must meet the requirements of Chapter 943 Florida Statutes and have one year of law enforcement experience. Two years of military or other appropriate experience may substitute for the required one year of law enforcement experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/ technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Position Qualifications: Knowledge of law enforcement and investigative principles and techniques, crime prevention and control procedures. Knowledge of the criminal justice system, rules of evidence, arrest, search and seizure procedures. Knowledge of federal, state, and local statutes relating to traffic and criminal violations; UWF policies and procedures; Collective Bargaining Agreement pertaining to law enforcement. Knowledge of effective supervisory principles. Preferred Qualifications Ability to read and write. High School education. Essential Functions / Job Duties:

  • 15% - Conducts investigations into violations of federal, state and local laws; secures and conducts preliminary investigations at crime scenes; collects, identifies and preserves evidence; makes official reports of complaints and all criminal and non-criminal miscellaneous incidents that he/she investigates on university property; assists in crowd, mob and riot control activities; coordinates law enforcement activities and other agencies as required. - (Essential)
  • 15% - Patrol the University campus, either on foot or in a police vehicle, to enforce laws and provide a maximum crime deterrence through conspicuous, aggressive patrol of grounds and other campus facilities. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Provides fire watch for all buildings, property and other facilities on campus; reports violations of environmental health, safety, and fire codes; assists in evacuating persons housed in or otherwise occupying areas threatened by fire or other disaster; attempts to control fires pending arrival of local fire departments; assists in search and rescue activities. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Provides non-law enforcement public services as authorized by law and consistent with good police practices and which are of benefit to students, faculty, staff and visitors; maintains good police/community relations by focusing on information and education which culminates in community action and crime prevention. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Responds to and investigates traffic accidents and prepares and submits traffic accident reports; secures traffic accident scenes as necessary and administers basic life support and first aid within means until arrival of competent medical personnel. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Inspects and maintains equipment assigned to him/her; assists in coordinating and directing the activities on non-sworn departmental personnel; prepare records, reports, and correspondence as required or directed. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Interviews complainants, victims, witnesses, and suspects; apprehends and arrests criminal offenders; appears in court as an arresting officer or witness. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Provides for the orderly and efficient movement and control of vehicular and pedestrian traffic on and through the University by education and direct enforcement actions; issues warnings and citations for traffic law and parking regulation violations; enforces parking regulations and directs and controls the flow of traffic and parking as required or directed. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Reduces theft of state and university property by providing continuing safety and security analysis of facilities and making recommendations for improvement on existing security systems. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Utilizes appropriate physical restraint techniques to arrest combative individuals. - (Essential)
  • 5% - At the beginning of each shift, review all new assignments and events having occurred since the last tour of duty. - (Essential)
