Job Summary:

The Department of Mathematics at UW-Madison is seeking an exceptional instructor to support the department's early-career faculty and postdocs. One of the largest departments on campus, Mathematics is home to over 400 workers including faculty, academic staff, university staff, pre- and postdoctoral trainees; as well as graduate and undergraduate student employees.

The Associate Director of Instructional Support will provide guidance, direction, and support to help acclimate these new instructors to the instructional expectations of the university and department. Additionally, the person in this role will serve as a resource for all department instructors to enhance the quality of teaching in the undergraduate courses offered by the department. The person in this role will work closely with the Director of Instructional Staff Operations and the Associate Chair to continue to develop and enhance effective practices for supporting our instructors and faculty.

This is a year-round (12-month) position. In addition to the primary responsibilities, summer work will also consist of contributing to instructional projects as assigned by department leadership.

Principal duties:

Instructional Support
  • Observe the teaching performance of first and second-year instructors (faculty, postdoc, and short-term staff) who are assigned undergraduate courses
  • Serve as a resource and provide instructional support to members of the department for undergraduate courses
  • Provide orientation and training on instructional systems (e.g. Canvas, Piazza, etc.), assist with course setup, and advise on best practices and instructional tools throughout the year
  • Provide professional development to graduate students serving as instructor of record during the summer term

Instruction:
  • Teach 3 courses per year as assigned by the Associate Chair

Responsibilities:

Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction associated with more than one lecture or laboratory course, assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.
  • 5% Works with faculty to identify and develop new methods of advancing instruction in the discipline
  • 10% Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • 10% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and may train other staff in use of these techniques
  • 40% Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • 5% Assists in development of grant proposals for funding of model instruction programs
  • 10% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • 5% May make presentations to faculty and to staff members on instructional programs and techniques
  • 15% Provides professional development around curriculum development and program implementation to support other instructors in the unit

PhD
Mathematics or related science is required. Preference will be given to PhD in Mathematics

Qualifications:

Required
  • Minimum 5 years experience teaching undergraduate mathematics courses
  • Demonstrated innovation and excellence in teaching undergraduate students

Preferred
  • Experience with instruction in an active learning environment
  • Experience in providing instructional supervision and/or mentoring

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
