What are the responsibilities and job description for the Data Scientist I position at University of Wisconsin Madison?

Job Summary:

The Data Scientist will work within the South Laboratory, directed by Dr. Andrew South, to support projects associated with tissue damage-driven cancer initiation and progression. The successful candidate will work with existing and newly generated raw and processed sequencing data to generate library QC, annotate reads and perform comparative analysis to assess somatic mutation, mutational signatures and RNA expression in a range of human tumor and normal tissue samples.

This is a terminal position intended for 12 months, with the possibility to extend to 24 months. This is an opportunity for a data scientist to gain experience in genomics analysis

Responsibilities: Contributes to a research agenda set by a lead researcher by preparing data sets, analyzing them using data science techniques, and presenting the results. Works as part of a team under general supervision.
  • 30% Prepares data sets for analysis including cleaning/quality assurance, transformations, restructuring, and integration of multiple data sources
  • 30% Implements appropriate data science techniques under the guidance of other data scientists, statisticians, and/or other researchers to find data patterns and answer research questions chosen by the lead researcher including data visualization, statistical analysis, machine learning, and data mining
  • 15% Organizes and automates project steps for data preparation and analysis
  • 15% Composes and assembles reproducible workflows and reports to clearly articulate patterns to researchers and/or administrators
  • 10% Documents approaches to address research questions

Education:

Preferred
Master's Degree in computer sciences or a related discipline.

Qualifications:

The position requires knowledge of and skills in standard massively parallel nucleic acid sequencing analysis, utilizing genomic workflows centered on analyzing whole genome and whole exome DNA sequencing data as well as bulk, single cell, and spatial RNA sequencing data.

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 12 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding

Salary:

Minimum $48,814 ANNUAL (12 months)

Additional Information:

University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship. The selected applicant will be responsible for ensuring their continuous eligibility to work in the United States (i.e. a citizen or national of the United States, a lawful permanent resident, a foreign national authorized to work in the United States without the need of an employer sponsorship) on or before the effective date of appointment. This position is currently scheduled to end 3/21/2026 and will require eligibility to work until that time.
