What are the responsibilities and job description for the TEACHING FACULTY IN ESL position at University of Wisconsin–Madison?
- -Coordinate core ESL Program courses; design curriculum and new courses; provide instruction for TESOL Certificate courses. Provide classroom instruction in the ESL Program. A normal full-time load is two courses per semester; teach courses developed for TESOL Certificate and MA student; supervise and take part in the campus-wide international TA training program.
- -Manage campus-wide English testing proficiency test development and administration (ESLAT and SPEAK tests).
- -Collaborate with other staff members to ensure quality of the program; remain up to date in theory and methodology and attend and/or present at professional conferences. show initiative in bringing about changes and development of program curricula and procedures; play a contributing role in program projects and developments; assist in program administration via various committees (e.g. Textbook, Hiring, Data Management, and Publicity); offer training and workshop support for units across campus (e.g. library staff); may serve on departmental or campus committees.
- 10% Designs curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction in courses within that discipline
- 5% Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
- 10% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and trains faculty and other instructional staff in use of said instructional techniques and programs
- 5% Presents evaluations of teaching methods and techniques to those in the institution and elsewhere
- 60% Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
- 5% Develops grant proposals for instructional development and may serve as principal or co-principal investigator on grants to develop new teaching methods in the discipline
- 5% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties

Master's Degree
Masters in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, or related field with a specialization in ESL
- -A minimum of 5 years teaching experience in ESL Programs at the post-secondary level, including English for academic purposes and professional purposes
- -Course coordination and/or program administration experience
- -Experience and interest in curriculum development
- -Ability to lead and supervise others
- -Teacher training experience
- -Strong interpersonal skills
- -The ability to work well on a team
- -Familiarity with instructional technologies
- -Evidence of continuing professional activity
Preferred Qualifications
- -Experience mentoring new ESL teacher;

The mission of the Program in English as a Second Language in the English Department is to support the University's international students by providing ESL instruction, to enhance undergraduate education through work with international teaching assistants, to train prospective ESL teachers, and to support the University's community and international outreach goals. Additional duties include evaluating SPEAK tests and administering and evaluating English as a Second Language Assessment Test (ESLAT).
