Job Summary:

The mission of the Program in English as a Second Language in the English Department is to support the University's multilingual students by providing academic English language instruction, to enhance undergraduate education through work with international teaching assistants, to train prospective English language teachers, and to support the University's community and international outreach goals. Additional duties include overseeing the administration of the SPEAK Test and the English as a Second Language Assessment Test (ESLAT).

The key functions of the Teaching Faculty in ESL role include:

  • Coordinate core ESL Program courses; design curriculum and new courses; provide instruction for TESOL Certificate courses. Provide classroom instruction in the ESL Program. A normal full-time load is two courses per semester; teach courses developed for TESOL Certificate and MA student; supervise and take part in the campus-wide international TA training program.
  • Oversee training and professional development programs for new Teaching Assistants, and Lecturers and assist the instructors with course planning, organization, and curricular development; serve as a resource and mentor to others on the staff, particularly for teaching assistants.
  • Manage campus-wide English testing proficiency test development and administration (ESLAT and SPEAK tests).
  • Collaborate with other staff members to ensure quality of the program; remain up to date in theory and methodology and attend and/or present at professional conferences; show initiative in bringing about changes and development of program curricula and procedures; play a contributing role in program projects and developments; assist in program administration via various committees (e.g. Textbook, Hiring, Data Management, and Publicity); offer training and workshop support for units across campus (e.g. library staff); may serve on departmental or campus committees.

Responsibilities: Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction associated with more than one lecture or laboratory course, assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.

  • 10% Designs curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction in courses within that discipline
  • 5% Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • 10% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and trains faculty and other instructional staff in use of said instructional techniques and programs
  • 5% Presents evaluations of teaching methods and techniques to those in the institution and elsewhere
  • 60% Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • 5% Develops grant proposals for instructional development and may serve as principal or co-principal investigator on grants to develop new teaching methods in the discipline
  • 5% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties

Education:

Required

Master's Degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, or related field with a specialization in ESL

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience in ESL Programs at the post-secondary level, including English for academic purposes and professional purposes.
  • Ability to teach all skill areas including academic writing, reading, and vocabulary skills, oral communication, pronunciation, and grammar.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English, aligned with the demands and expectations of an English language educator
  • Course coordination and/or program administration experience
  • Experience and interest in curriculum development
  • Ability to lead and supervise others
  • Teacher training experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work well on a team
  • Familiarity with instructional technologies
  • Evidence of continuing professional activity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience mentoring new ESL teachers
  • Experience teaching diverse groups of students in a variety of settings
  • Knowledge of an additional language
  • Experience living and teaching abroad

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $65,000 ACADEMIC (9 months)

Depending On Qualifications

The minimum starting salary for this position is $65,000 depending on qualifications and experience. The salary will be paid out over 9 months. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as sick leave; competitive insurance and saving accounts; and retirement benefits. Employees have the option to continue benefits for the full calendar year.
