Position Summary
Cleans institutional facilities, removes waste and recycling, and monitors building security to ensure cleanliness, orderliness, and safety in assigned areas. Leads the custodial work of others and responds to custodial emergencies. This position fills in and covers multiple areas around campus as needed.
Responsibilities
Utilizes basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned facility areas and remove waste and recyclables
- Ensures adequate custodial supplies are requisitioned and distributed. Maintain records of supply distribution
- Assists with regular equipment inventories to ensure equipment is where it belongs, and that staff are taking care of equipment
- Tests, evaluates and recommends new products, equipment and procedures
- Supports waste minimization efforts on campus by working with building staff to recommend or implement different processes for trash and recycling collections, as well as other universal and hazardous wastes
Monitors and secures facility interior and exterior entrances and reports issues to appropriate entities
- Ensures all equipment is adequately maintained and recommends repair or replacement in collaboration with building staff. May perform minor repairs.
Maintains organization of supply areas and equipment, documents inventory, and requests additional supplies
- Ensures the buildings of responsibility have supplies and equipment necessary
- Communicates, on a timely basis, the need for ordering supplies and work with purchasing to complete orders.
- Works closely with vendors to ensure knowledge of changes in equipment and methods related to custodial work is current.
Documents and reports repairs, violations, and pest control needs
- Recommend repairs through the work order system or call the Facilities Management Office in emergency situations.
- Follow up to make sure repairs are completed correctly
Maintains clean and clear walkways to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
Schedules, monitors, trains and communicates with building staff, vendors and campus resources

- Directs building and student staff to ensure tasks are completed as expected
- Provide training to all new employees, ongoing training on proper cleaning techniques and use of equipment and supplies, and student employees
- Facilitate at least one training quarterly to all staff
- Collaborates with staff to improve operations, increase efficiencies, and provide great service
Responds to facility emergency and hazardous situations, and escalates incidents according to established policies and procedures
- May be called in after regular work hours to appraise emergency situations and call-in custodians to assist with issue
Responsibilities will vary significantly from day to day depending on needs of campus and departmental activities
Plans, assigns, and performs periodic tasks
- In collaboration with building custodians, develops and maintains a schedule for periodic major projects including floor refinishing, carpet shampooing, window washing, wall washing, foaming of restrooms, etc.
- Assist with major projects, event setups and teardowns, transportation of surplus items for surplus sale and furniture moves
Operates state vehicles. This requires a valid driver’s license
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Required Qualifications:
- Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license for authorization to drive University vehicles
- Perform custodial duties
- Communicate effectively with supervisor, coworkers, contractors, and customers.

- Recognize safety concerns and adhere to safety procedures

- Use or learn to use various custodial equipment and cleaning and miscellaneous chemicals

- Ability to perform manual labor including frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds or more., turning, stooping, bending and twisting
- Ability to climb and work on ladders and scaffolding to perform duties such as replacing light bulbs, cleaning light fixtures, cleaning ledges, walls and ceilings, etc.
- Successful completion of a post-offer employment test

The pay rate is $18 per hour.
The selected candidate must be able to pass a post-offer employment test and hold a valid driver’s license to obtain Wisconsin certification to drive University vehicles.
A six probationary period is required.
