POSITION:

Police Officer I, CP039, Full-time: 100%, University Staff, Annual (12-month) Ongoing/Renewable, one vacancy


POSITION SUMMARY:

Enforces laws, investigates complaints and incidents, maintains order, identifies criminal activity, and apprehends and arrest offenders to ensure safety and security on all institutional properties. Other services include providing escorts, money handling, access to facilities, and providing educational programming support to various student and staff groups. This is a sworn law enforcement position under the general direction of a ranking officer or supervisor.


DUTIES:

  • Provides protection of life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order and provides emergency aid to the institutional community.
  • Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case information.
  • Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws.
  • Provides personal safety and crime prevention education to institutional community.
  • Engages in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others.


Public Services to University

  • Provide personal safety escorts for students, staff, or faculty to campus area.
  • Provide escort and delivery of money bags.
  • Provide non-emergency medical transportation.
  • Control crowds and traffic associated with large group events.
  • Alert administration to weather or safety concerns which may affect campus.
  • Assist with critical incidents and incident command situations as directed.

Other Duties:

  • Complete required trainings and professional development as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of investigatory methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of Wisconsin state statutes, UW-System rules/regulations, traffic, and parking regulations.
  • Knowledgeable on criminal arrest proceedings, rules of evidence, search, and seizure laws
  • Knowledge of criminal justice system and prosecutorial procedures.
  • Physical ability to patrol via foot, bike, and vehicle.
  • Proficiency with self-defense and arrest tactics.
  • Meet and maintain state and departmental guidelines for carrying a firearm.
  • Ability to react quickly and effectively to stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle for the purpose of conducting university business and meet the criteria for operation of state-owned-vehicles - Policy 615


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

  • Eligible to become Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certified
  • Possess valid driver's license and meet criteria for operation of state-owned vehicles.


This position is currently ineligible for H1-B sponsorship. A qualification for this position includes independent eligibility to work within the United States upon hire date.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

  • Previous law enforcement experience
  • Previous completion of a Wisconsin Accredited Law Enforcement Academy
  • Associate degree or higher
  • Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) Training
  • Basic Life Support/First Aid Certified (including CPR training)
  • Pursuit driving training
  • Experience working within the principles of community-oriented policing in a higher education environment


SALARY & BENEFITS:

Salary range for this position is: $26 - $29/hour. Specific benefit information can be found here. A snapshot of benefits offered for this position include:

Paid Time Off:

*Hours are pro-rated based on appointment percentage for less than 100%-time employees.

  • 104 hours of Vacation (with increases upon continuous years of service)
  • 36 hours of Personal
  • 130 hours of Sick Leave
