Job Summary :

The UW-Madison Cryo-EM Research Centers comprise two facilities, the UW-Madison Department of Biochemistry Cryo-EM Research Center () and the NIH-funded Midwest Center for Cryo-ET (). Together, these Centers house state-of-the-art cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) instrumentation, including multiple Titan Krios TEMs, a Talos Arctica TEM, cryo-FIB-SEMs, and advanced sample preparation and computational infrastructure. These technologies support bioscience researchers from academia, government, and private industry.

We seek an Associate Director to work closely with the Director to manage the scientific operations, administrative functions, and strategic initiatives of these expanding research centers. The Associate Director will :

  • Assist with planning and directing the Centers' scientific research activities.
  • Participate in developing and implementing training, service, and research programs.
  • Collaborate on strategic planning, including evaluating current and future technology needs.
  • Oversee performance goals and metrics, ensuring compliance with university, state, and federal policies.
  • Supervise and mentor team members, delegating day-to-day workflows and supporting professional development.
  • Foster an inclusive and productive environment for research, training, education, and outreach.

This position is ideal for a senior colleague with a strong background in cryo-EM, structural biology, or related areas, who also has proven experience in research administration, outreach, and team leadership. The Associate Director will join a vibrant team of scientists and administrative personnel who work cohesively to support the growing UW-Madison cryo-EM research resources and research community.

Responsibilities : Assists with the oversight and strategic planning for a center or program and may assist with directing a variety of research activities. Allocates resources, secures funding, and supervises staff to ensure program strategies and activities align with the institutional mission.

  • 10% Determines unit personnel needs and the unit personnel resource allocation plan
  • 20% Serves as a unit liaison to internal stakeholder groups to foster cross-unit partnership efforts regarding research programs and activities
  • 10% Serves as a consultant to project directors and provides technical expertise to research and operational personnel
  • 20% Collaborates with project directors and the full range of clients whose knowledge and expertise varies
  • 10% Manages large research projects for a center or program
  • 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and / or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 10% Assists with planning, implementation, and management of strategic initiatives for a center or program

    Education : Required

    PhDand postdoctoral training in a relevant field such as structural biology, biochemistry, or related disciplines required.

    Qualifications :

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Extensive experience with relevant research and technical experience in the structural biology sciences that could include cryo-EM (preferred), protein crystallography, or NMR spectroscopy.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and establish relationships with colleagues and collaborators in oral and written communication.
  • Experience supervising or leading complex programs, projects, or teams to leverage resources and achieve goals.
  • Demonstrated time-management skills, attention to detail, ability to problem solve, and ability to work independently.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Proficiency with financial tools and systems utilized in an academic, government, and / or industry research enterprises to successfully complete fiscal processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and analyze state and federal rules and regulations and navigate policy to ensure compliance within a complex organization.
  • Experience overseeing financial portfolios within academic / government settings.

    It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

    Salary :

    Minimum $120,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

    Depending on Qualifications

    The anticipated salary range for this position is $120,000 up to $150,000 but, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications.
