Job Summary :

The Department of Surgical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin, School of Veterinary Medicine is soliciting applications for 1 full-time Assistant / Associate Professor in Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery. The successful candidate will join the Orthopedic Surgery Section, which is comprised 3 full-time ACVS Diplomates, 6 residents, and a dynamic group of certified veterinary technicians.

The UW Veterinary Care Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility equipped with advanced equipment including arthroscopy, MRI, CT and ultrasound. Tenure track faculty are typically assigned to 10-12 weeks of clinic duty annually although an increased load if needed (up to 16 weeks) may be needed at some times. It is anticipated that the faculty member will develop an independent research program, which will be supported by acquisition of extramural funding and will incorporate training opportunities for interns, residents, veterinary students, and / or graduate students. Participation in classroom lecture and laboratory to be equitably distributed across the section. Clinical duties include leading resident-based or student-based rounds that involve approximately 3 hours per week. Student case-based rounds are conducted by faculty in conjunction with residents when the faculty are assigned to clinic duties.

Responsibilities :

Responsibilities will include providing clinical service in the teaching hospital, participation in clinical and didactic teaching of veterinary students, residents and interns, and pursuit of clinical research. Clinical duties include leading resident-based or student-based rounds that involve approximately 5 hours per week. Student case-based rounds are conducted by faculty in conjunction with residents when the faculty are assigned to clinic duties.

Approximately 25% in Clinical Practice of Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery (up to 12-14 weeks of clinic duty) and 10-15% non-clinical teaching (10 lectures / year and 5-10 laboratories / year), research 50-70% and 10-15% in Service.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent.

Qualifications :

A Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons with advanced training in orthopedic surgery is preferred. Board-eligible individuals will also be considered. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to develop an academic program that includes Orthopedic Surgery.

This position has a strong emphasis on patient management, but also teaching and clinical or basic science research. Experience working with, teaching, or mentoring diverse groups including interns, residents, undergraduate students, veterinary professional students, and graduate students is preferred.

License / Certification :

DVM - Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

or equivalent. Must be eligible to obtain and maintain licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Wisconsin.

SVM is nearing the end of construction on the new facility that will improve instruction space for students, double the size of the school's small animal hospital and significantly enhance the large animal hospital, expand labs for studying naturally occurring animal and human diseases, and increase and modernize infectious disease research space. Future upgrades via remodeling of current hospital include an Imaging Center with large animal-capable 3T MRI, 16-slice CT, and future PET-CT. Completion of the addition is projected for late 2023.
