JOB TITLE:

Research Professional I

JOB PURPOSE:

Work under the guidance of SER Research Professional II or III, Program Manager, Center Director, Senior Director of Research on applied energy research to drive energy-related economic development for Wyoming. This Research Professional I position will work under the guidance of senior research professionals and program managers at the Center for Economic Geology Research (CEGR), a Center of Excellence at the University of Wyoming's School of Energy Resources (SER), on applied energy research. This position seeks a specialist in reservoir engineering, modeling and simulating, with a preference towards candidates that have experience in carbon management and/or energy production.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Undertake research based on energy-related subject matter expertise.
  • Conduct energy-related research tasks as requested by supervisor.
  • Present verbally, prepare reports and other materials as needed to communicate the results.
  • Actively participate in team meetings
  • Regular, predictable attendance is required to perform the essential duties of this position.
  • Utilize scientific methods to analyze data pertaining to subsurface characterization and reservoir engineering.
  • Assess data, such as petrophysical well logs, in-situ well tests, and experimental laboratory datasets for incorporation into property models and simulations.
  • Employ relevant reservoir engineering simulation software such as Eclipse and Visage to facilitate the highest quality output.
  • Develop models and perform dynamic simulations, such as reservoir simulations and geomechanical modeling.
  • Aid in the preparation of scientific reports and publications.
  • Help to oversee data collection, monitor for data quality, and maintain and ensure input into relevant databases.
  • Provide scientific inputs to carbon storage field projects.
  • Support preparation of proposals for applied research in subsurface characterization with objectives of commercialization.
  • Engage in a professional manner to have a positive impact on the performance and morale of CEGR staff, relations with stakeholders, and the overall quality of the Center.
  • Work closely with CEGR and School of Energy Resources staff, stakeholders, collaborators, and industry stakeholders on applied energy studies.

  • Design, organize, and coordinate scientific and/or engineering research tasks and projects.
  • Use independent judgment to develop model concepts and approaches for advancing research associated with reservoir engineering.
  • Develop and follow research methodologies and protocols.
  • Draw conclusions and make recommendations based on research data and findings.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Work as a team member and foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Draft technical scientific reports and publications.
  • Run industry-standard reservoir engineering software such as Petrel and Eclipse to design and develop simulations and assess reservoir/field performance

  • Experience evaluating, characterizing and integrating subsurface data including well logs and in-situ field test, and analytical data from core and fluid experiments for reservoir modeling.
  • Competency using industry-standard reservoir engineering software, such as Petrel, Eclipse and Visage, to design and develop simulations and assess reservoir/field performance.
  • Experience designing and simulating fluid injection and production.
  • Laboratory experience on the experimental design and implementation of high pressure core floods, fluid PVT measurement, relative permeability and wettability determination, optimization of pore space utilization and geologic CO2 storage mechanism.
  • Experience evaluating field performance metrics to develop and optimize operational strategies.

WORK LOCATION:

This position is eligible for a flexible work schedule.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field (Physicist, Geochemist, Economist, Data/GIS/Computer Science, Visualization, social sciences related to energy development, etc.)
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • PhD in reservoir and/or petroleum engineering, petrophysics, data science, or similar field
  • Experience in the energy and/or carbon management industry
