The Office of Communications and Marketing supports the College of LAS and its units in pursuit of their strategic goals. The office is focused on student recruitment, advancement, reputation management, and building community among the college’s key stakeholders.

The Marketing Specialist is part of the marketing team within the LAS Office of Communications and Marketing and is focused on developing and implementing content strategy for websites across the college. This position works closely with web, marketing, and communications staff within the college team and unit partners across the college to support strategic priorities through creation of on-brand content strategies and copy for LAS websites. This person will ensure strong user experiences driven by best practices, analytics, and SEO. The Marketing Specialist will build and maintain relationships with unit website content managers across the college to ensure best outcomes.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Working with other college team members, develop and maintain a website content strategy that is on brand, focused on key audiences, and effectively supports college strategic priorities.
  • Provide guidance, including content guides, to unit website content managers in applying the content strategy for their websites.
  • Manage non-news content on the college website. Review and approve content edits, build new content, and make regular updates. Create and maintain a plan for refreshing content throughout the year.
  • Write targeted copy to help units reach key audiences, including prospective students and alumni.
  • Conduct periodic assessments of unit websites—including monitoring updates for timeliness and effectiveness—and make recommendations that improve content and overall user experience while supporting marketing and communication goals.
  • Monitor site analytics and make suggestions for improving content strategy.
  • Research and help implement search engine optimization (SEO) strategies across college websites.
  • Provide guidance to unit partners on how to most effectively use college content management system(s).
  • Contribute to and work within the project management program used by the team for maximum organization and efficiency.
  • Stay informed on current best practices for website marketing—especially content marketing, analytics, and SEO—and make recommendations for new features and tactics based on this
  • Collaborate with other colleges and campus offices and represent LAS on committees or in meetings.
  • Work with LAS units to create strategies and content for digital signage.
  • Other duties as assigned to further the mission of the college.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field. One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience writing, especially for the web or other marketing channels.
  • Experience with website analytics analysis and search engine optimization (SEO).
  • Experience with managing web content through a web content management system (CMS).
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of best practices in writing content and producing media for the web.
  • Knowledge of web analytics tools including Google Analytics.
  • Knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO) and implementing content optimizations to improve organic search.
  • Knowledge of website accessibility standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others. Excellent written communication skills.
  • Awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural and linguistic differences. Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once, meet deadlines, maintain attention to detail, and work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills for evaluation and measurement of web content.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with technical professionals and understand technical requirements of web technologies.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5004 - Marketing Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after deadline date. The starting salary for this position is $40,000. Actual starting salary will be determined by the candidate’s credentials and alignment with the position requirements. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (remote work and in-person work in Champaign-Urbana each week). Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.
