The Float Pool at UPMC Hamot is looking for an Administrator on Duty!

Our Float Pool is a small dynamic team that can work autonomously, while collaborating with every department within the organization.

This is an off-shift position. Primary shifts will be evening/nights. Weekends and holidays included.

The Administrator On Duty is accountable for proactively coordinating the activities of admission, discharge and transfer of patients thereby supporting throughput in the facility. Provides direction to department leaders to ensure safe levels of staffing while maintaining efficient hospital throughput. Serves as a resource for all staff and is able to apply competent knowledge and skills to achieve quality outcomes. Provides an interim leadership including but not limited to crisis management intervention as a representative of hospital administration. Channels pertinent patient/employee/department information to appropriate internal and external sources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coach colleagues on cultural diversity and address workplace issues such as horizontal violence and impairment.
  • Develop and maintain productive internal and external relationships by fostering teamwork, mentoring, and modeling positive communication.
  • Demonstrate accountability for self and others regarding safe work hours, time management, and promoting healthy lifestyles.
  • Build trust by acknowledging the contributions of others, actively listening, creating transparency in communication, confronting challenges, and clarifying expectations.

Patient Care Coordination:

  • Use sound judgment and analytical skills to oversee patient placement and facilitate the Admission/Discharge/Transfer (ADT) process in collaboration with physicians and the healthcare team.
  • Employ critical thinking to advise and guide healthcare providers in delivering effective patient care while optimizing resource use.
  • Identify and address issues that affect hospital functionality, initiating corrective actions independently or with the appropriate administrative teams (Risk Management, Legal Services, Patient Relations, Administration, etc.).
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, efficient physical environment that supports patient, personnel, and visitor safety and comfort.

Mentorship and Development:

  • Actively mentor colleagues, positively impacting the lives of patients, families, peers, and the healthcare team through education and knowledge sharing.
  • Serve as a preceptor for student nurses, nurse interns, and both new and experienced nurses, helping to develop future preceptors.
  • Model a commitment to continuous learning through formal education and support the development of others in the workplace.
  • Share expertise and collaborate with team members across clinical units and departments.

Leadership and Improvement:

  • Support hospital administration by identifying and resolving opportunities for improvement, focusing on both patient and staff needs.
  • Engage staff and key stakeholders to enhance patient experience and hospital throughput.
  • Use appropriate interpersonal strategies to gain support for ideas, adjusting behaviors to suit tasks, situations, and individuals.
  • Offer support to staff during times of transition and demonstrate the ability to influence through professional and advocacy organization participation.

Quality Improvement:

  • Utilize research and evidence-based practices to support improvements in hospital operations, including capacity management.
  • Identify research opportunities to improve patient throughput and quality of care, actively pursuing change initiatives and fostering quality improvement efforts.
    • BS/BSN required.
    • If BS degree not in nursing, a Master’s or higher degree in Nursing is required.
    • CNL/MSN preferred.
    • Minimum of 3 years clinical experience required with relevant leadership experience preferred.
    • Must maintain a solid/strong performer rating on annual performance review.
    • Registered Nurse.


    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    ACLS preferred CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

    • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
    • Registered Nurse (RN)
    • Act 33 with renewal
    • Act 34 with renewal
    • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
    • Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
