This small group of 5-6 teachers is looking to add a Developmental Specialist to the team. As the Developmental Specialist you will provide daily instruction to patients, ages 13-18, in Western Psychiatric Hospital’s inpatient units. Your daily activities will include assessing patients, planning their lessons, monitoring their progress, and communicating with their home school. In addition, the Developmental Specialist will communicate with the treatment team on a regular basis regarding each patient's classroom performance and behavior. Must be a Certified Special Education Teacher.
Responsibilities : Lesson Planning
Write daily lesson plans for each student.
Submit plans for Monday through Friday by the end of the previous week.
Communication
Inform school of student's progress, including discharge summaries.
Regularly communicate with the student's home school.
Conduct 3-hour instructional sessions daily.
Observation and Reporting
Observe and record academic progress and patient behavior.
Present information at weekly treatment team meetings.
Collect and report detailed school history for educational recommendations.
Meetings and Development
Attend required meetings and staff development sessions.
Present educational information as needed.
Bachelor's degree in Education, Special Education, or Child Development is required with one year of relevant teaching experience required.
- Bachelor's degree in behavioral health field and 3 years of relevant teaching experience required.
Master's degree in Education, Special Education, or Child Development required with six months of relevant experience required.
Ability to relate sensitively to students and be consistently responsive to their needs.
Emotional stability, maturity and show evidence of good judgment.
Knowledge and understanding of developmentally appropriate practices.
Effectively communicate information to other staff members, parents, visitors, etc. Supervisory and leadership skills strongly preferred.
Successful teaching experience with students with special needs as documented by supervisor evaluations.
Previous experience in a treatment setting preferred
May in the course of their job duties be in rooms where medications are stored.
No contact with medications is allowed.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances :
Pennsylvania Teaching Certification in Special Education or Emotionally Socially disturbed within 8 weeks of hire required, Required License ACT 48 (completion of 180 continuing professional education hours every 5 years) to maintain an active teaching certification required. Maintain all Pennsylvania Department of Education PDE) requirements, including any new requirements deemed necessary by PDE.
