Under the direction of a respiratory therapist and in accordance with PA Practice Act or NY State guidelines, the student respiratory care assistant performs various functions, including ordering, inventorying, and distributing equipment (including medical gases). This role also assists clinical staff with tasks as directed, focusing on the assembly, transport, disinfection, calibration, and troubleshooting of respiratory equipment.
Responsibilities:
- Provide excellent service by responding to the needs of patients, families, physicians, and staff.
- Maintain and supply transport oxygen and oxygen cylinders in inpatient units, emergency departments, and clinics.
- Assemble, maintain, and clean respiratory care equipment; disinfect before calibration and assembly.
- Transport dirty equipment using proper infection control techniques.
- Handle and use cleaning and disinfecting solutions and equipment appropriately.
- Use personal protective equipment correctly.
- Report equipment malfunctions to respiratory leadership.
- Inspect and ensure equipment is correctly assembled and functioning; perform preventative maintenance.
- Calibrate equipment to department or manufacturer specifications.
- Transport equipment between inpatient units and procedure areas as directed.
- Assist in tracking respiratory care equipment with the biomedical technician.
- Identify, catalog, and track all respiratory care equipment.
- Assist with bronchoscope procedures, including setup and processing scopes.
- Assist with non-emergent intubations and extubations.
- Download and document 4-channel sleep studies.
- Perform smoking cessation counseling per department policy.
- Deliver home care supplies such as oxygen tanks/compressors.
- Maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office, electronic health records, and ordering systems.
