POSITION: Long-term Substitute Groundskeeper

START DATE: Immediately - TBD

SALARY: $23.54 per hour

LOCATION: Maintenance Location

 

FLSA:   Non-exempt

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:  The main purpose of the Grounds Keeper is to assist the Head Groundskeeper in maintaining and caring for the school grounds.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

The Grounds Keeper reports directly to the Head Groundskeeper and the Director of Facilities.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

12 Month

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The list is intended to be illustrative rather than complete and serves to show major duties and responsibilities and does not express or imply that these are the only duties to be performed by the incumbent in this position.  The employee will be required to perform any other position-related duties requested by the Superintendent.

 

  1. Maintain and care for school grounds.
  2. Work exclusively on existing grounds and use various hand tools and gas-powered tools to mow and maintain grass, rake leaves, trim bushes and trees, plant flowers and shrubbery, remove dead plants, water and fertilize vegetation and get grounds ready for seasonal changes. 
  3. Apply fertilizers and weed control chemicals as directed by Head Groundskeeper.
  4. Adjusts and repairs such equipment as lawnmowers, sprinklers, and hedge shears as directed.
  5. During winter, assists in the plowing of snow from sidewalks, driveways, and playgrounds, and spreads sand or salt as needed.
  6. Assist Head Groundskeeper in the repair of outdoor facilities.
  7. Handle emergency situations that might occur.
  8. Mark P.E. fields and athletic fields
  9. Prepare stadium for District and public events
  10. Complies with all Federal, state and local laws and regulations for the storage, use and disposal of trash, rubbish, waste and hazardous material [OSHA].
  11. Other duties as assigned by the Head Groundskeeper.

QUALIFICATIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skill and/or ability necessary. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • High school diploma or training and experience that are considered equivalent.
  • A practical knowledge of lawn care including fertilizers, seeds, and sprays.
  • Demonstrates experience and competence in grounds maintenance and possesses a strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to use the material, tools, and equipment safely.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor
  • Have valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License.
  • Possess effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interface diplomatically with others:  teachers, administrators, parents, students, support staff and outside professional contacts.
  • Positive attitude and ability to participate in a team environment.
  • Available to work flexible hours at certain busy periods of the year.

 

Any additional or alternative qualifications as deemed appropriate by the School District.

This position requires sitting, standing, walking or moving throughout the district, often for extended periods of the workday.  Must be able to hear (40 decibel loss maximum), verbally communicate, and have vision requirements of near acuity of 20 inches or less and far acuity of 20 feet or more with depth perception, accommodation and field of vision.  Performs a variety of duties, able to make judgments and work under high level of stress.  Lifts/carries papers/office supplies weighing no more than 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 75 pounds.  Climb stairs and ladders in and or around the building.  May occasionally bend and reach to secure items from shelves or racks.  Requires use of either hand for simple grasping, fine manipulation and push/pull functions.  The position is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
