Position Summary
The Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Upper Iowa University reports directly to the Head Men's Basketball Coach and is responsible for assisting in the planning, directing, and evaluating all aspects and facets of a successful Men's Basketball program on the NCAA Division II level. Duties include, but not limited to: recruitment of highly skilled and academically qualified student-athletes, monitor academic progress and eligibility, and effectively analyze and teach the fundamentals skills and strategies of the sport. Directly assist in the planning, organizing, conducting, and evaluating of practices session along with develop, implement, and evaluate game plans and strategies. Serve as a leader, mentor, and role-model to the student-athletes of the program. Directly assist Head Coach in the preparation of competitive team schedule, participate in public relations/media activities, and fundraising initiatives. Oversee administrative processes and procedures as assigned. Ensure compliance with all Department, University, NCAA, and GLVC policies, procedures, and regulations.
Position Responsibilities
- Directly assist Head Coach directing and supervising the overall planning and execution of the intercollegiate men's basketball program.
- Promote the philosophy and objectives of the men's basketball program, the intercollegiate athletic department, and University.
- Serve as a leader, mentor, and role model to the student-athletes of the men's basketball program.
- Identify, evaluate, and recruit highly skilled and academically qualified student-athletes.
- Monitor academic progress and eligibility status of team members and implementing action plans and counseling as necessary.
- Effectively analyze and teach the fundamental skills and strategies of men's basketball.
- Plan, organize, conduct, and evaluate practice sessions.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate game plans, strategies, and in-game adjustments.
- Assist in field maintenance.
- Assist head coach with preparation and scheduling of the team competitive game schedule.
- Counsel and mentor team members in disciplinary, conduct, and personal matters.
- Participate in public relations activities to include media interviews, press conferences, and public appearances.
- Assist with fund raising initiatives for the men's basketball program and Department of Athletics, in consultation with the Office of Advancement and Department of Athletics.
- Responsible for individual and staff in adhering to the policies, procedures, and regulations of the University, Department of Athletics, National Collegiate Athletic Association {NCAA), and Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).
- Coordinate and work with the Office of Admissions in the recruitment of potential student-athletes and campus visits.
- Assist in the management and purchase of team related equipment and uniforms.
- Assist, as necessary, for all administrative processes and procedures as it relates to the men's basketball program.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to operate computer and associated software.

Key Competencies
- Knowledge of NCAA and GLVC rules and regulations.
- Knowledge and understanding of intercollegiate men's basketball (fundamentals, position details, strategies, etc.) at the NCAA Division II level.
- Efficiency and the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines for a wide variety of assignments.
- Ability to work autonomously and demonstrate excellent judgment in decision-making along with establishing priorities and importance of tasks.
- Skilled in computer use and software applications, including database, spread sheet, presentation and word processing.
- Ability and confidence to immediately address and resolve problems and issues is required.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelors degree required.
- Two (2) years experience with organized boy's/men's basketball at the collegiate or AAU level.
- Ability to works nights, weekends, and holidays as needed and assigned.
- Communication and computer skills are required.
- Working knowledge and understanding of NCAA and NSIC rules and regulations.
