UPPCO seeks entry-level Apprentice Substation Technicians to join their team in Ishpeming, Michigan. WHAT WE OFFER.

SCHEDULE. This position typically works five, eight-hour days and requires an ability to work overtime and respond to call-outs when needed; some overnight travel to work out of town may occur.
WHAT YOU WILL DO.
- Assist in performing electrical maintenance and construction of substation/generation control and instrument equipment (system controls, metering equipment; prepare minor field designs to modify instrument and control circuitry; analyze/correct system malfunctions; follow safety rules).
- Assist in preparing and organizing work assignments (obtain required tools, materials, equipment instruction bulletins and drawings; contact appropriate people to carry out assignments, report job progress).
- Assist with testing of instrument and control equipment.
- Maintain documentation and complete paperwork (record/prepare reports on tests and equipment maintenance, record field designs/revisions on drawings, cable schedules).
- Perform substation inspections as directed and forward information to your immediate supervisor.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.
- Associate degree or certification in Electrical Technology or a similar discipline, or equivalent military education and/or training required.
- 1 year experience in the electrical or electronics field preferred.
- Willingness to study to advance job knowledge. Standard entry level testing may be required. Progression testing and advancement through all phases of the apprenticeship program will be required.
- Possess clear and effective communication skills using telephones and two-way radios.
- Physical ability involving frequently lifting and/or carrying 50 lbs., reaching above shoulders, crawling, kneeling, bending, climbing, having hand-eye coordination, vision in both eyes, ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of color, and able to hear.
- Ability to work in an indoor shop/plant environment, outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions (deep snow, ice, rain, mud, wind, hot, humid, etc.), working with chemicals (solvents, degreasing agents, grease, oil, etc.), high voltage electrical energy and construction hazards, and on ladders/scaffolding/lifts up to 50 feet above ground.
- Valid driver’s license and able to attain/maintain a Class A CDL (commercial driver’s license) with air brake endorsement within 4 months of hire date.
- Must reside within 30 minutes of Ishpeming, Michigan Service Center under normal driving conditions.
