TITLE: WIC Program Assistant
REPORTS TO: Director and Assistant Director of Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
CLASSIFICATION: Non- Exempt
JOB SUMMARY:
Provides WIC services and performs supportive procedures in accordance with MDHHS WIC policies and procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Acquires confidential information from WIC participants to determine eligibility.
- Performs anthropometric and biochemical procedures needed to determine medical and/or nutritional risk.
- Performs screenings for income and adjunct eligibility and immunization status.
- Assists the Competent Professional Authority in certifying and recertifying WIC clients.
- May issue WIC benefits and schedule appointments.
- Enters data into designated MDHHS WIC programs (MI WIC) as established by WIC policy and procedure.
- Engages in outreach activity.
- Maintains required program logs and reports.
- Provide clinic and office support to CPA and other nutrition staff.
- Help implement program policies and protocols.
- Providing excellent customer service to clients.
- Multi-task and support client centered approaches.
- Participate in nutrition and breastfeeding promotion and support (may not provide nutrition education).
- Address incoming calls/inquiries and referrals from applicants and/or existing clients.
- Schedule appointments.
- Provide referrals to breastfeeding peer counselors.
- Arrange for interpreter or special needs as required.
- Offer and assist with voter registration to WIC participants, and authorized persons who are at least 18 years of age (by Election Day). Maintain declination forms as required by WIC policy.
- Issue EBT cards and log all cards following MDHHS WIC and local agency policy.
- Refer participants to other programs within the Urban League of Detroit & Southeastern Michigan or to outside agencies if indicated.
- Secure clinic equipment and supplies per MDHHS and local agency policy.
- Engage in outreach activity per local agency guidelines for services.
- Attend WIC in service trainings, Urban League of Detroit & Southeastern Michigan agency meeting, and MDHHS WIC Division scheduled trainings as assigned.
- Maintain inventory of WIC supplies. Order supplies as needed per local agency policy.
- Maintain needed files for clinic operations and reports.
- Perform other tasks as assigned in order to meet agency deadlines and objectives.
- Expected to rotate through ULDSEM WIC clinics as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
- High School graduate or the equivalent required.
- Proficient in computer/data entry.
EXPERIENCE:
- Ability to use a computer.
- Possesses good written and communication/telephone skills.
- Possesses good interpersonal skills and ability to maintain excellent customer service in a variety of conditions.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Will be required to work evening hours on some days during the week. Will be required to work some assigned Saturdays throughout the year.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Works primarily indoors. Travel may be required to Urban League of Detroit & Southeastern Michigan offices and WIC program clinic with exposure to road hazards and temperature extremes.
