Responsibilities:
Provides clinical therapy services to adult oncology patients and their families and provides services to patients in the outpatient setting; understands the unique ongoing psychosocial impact of cancer on patients and families’ emotional and financial stability, relationships, and changes in lifestyle throughout the cancer continuum (diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and end of life); provides individual/group therapy/education/support services to patients, families and staff; provides psychosocial assessment, counseling, crisis intervention, referrals and information to patients and families; as a team member with Supportive Care Clinic, works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to effect optimal patient and family outcomes; serves as a resource for the Oncology Program and Ancillary Departments; assesses social and emotional needs of patients/families and identifies patient/family resources required to meet oncology needs; completes psychosocial assessment to assist team in development of a care plan; provides crisis intervention, supportive counseling and initiates referrals to appropriate resources to ensure patient/family psychosocial and emotional needs are addressed; works with Oncology Navigation team to identify problems, provide targeted interventions and work towards resolution; identifies need for and conducts family meetings and/or interdisciplinary team conferences to resolve issues and ensure adherence to treatment; identifies and records clinical and psychosocial barriers to a smooth transition across the cancer care continuum and assists in identifying and facilitating system improvements; measures interventions against expected outcomes and modifies as indicated; manages issues such as abuse/neglect and advanced directives; serves as a resource to hospital staff and physicians regarding emotional, social and psychosocial components of patient illness; provides patient/family with referral to support groups; maintains current knowledge and resources availability of community agencies and community resources for social and emotional assistance; utilizes program development consultation and outcome tracking; maintains timely documentation and consistently meets programmatic documentation standards; maintains collaborative relationship with oncology care providers and community services; adheres to standards, policies and procedures at both the hospital and department level; promotes a service orientation in the performance of position duties and responsibilities and in interactions with patients, hospital staff and visitors; conducts research within IRB guidelines; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required; related duties as required.

Qualifications:
Master’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and licensure eligible with the state of Alabama as a Clinical Social Worker or Counselor. Licensure with the state of Alabama as a Clinical Social Worker or Counselor must be obtained within six months of employment. Counseling experience in medical oncology setting preferred.
