DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS
Purpose Statement:
Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Director of Communications (DC) is responsible for leading the development and execution of a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy that enhances the visibility, reputation, and growth of Salina Public Schools (SPS). Working closely with the superintendent, and as a member of Executive Team, this position develops, executes, supervises and maintains comprehensive and wide-ranging internal and external communications.
Reports to: Superintendent of Schools
Essential Functions:
- Oversee internal and external communications, develops a comprehensive communication and marketing plan that includes brand management, media relations and digital marketing campaigns to ensure consistent messaging, student recruitment and a strong organizational presence.
- Operate proactively to ensure that decision-making and implementation are based on the SPS vision and mission.
- Develop and produce external print and electronic communications including, but not limited to, website and external newsletters, email messages, video productions and social media.
- Serve as the primary media contact and spokesperson for the school district.
- Foster positive relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets.
- Provide strategic advice to district leadership on communications matters and crisis management.
- Support the communications needs of schools and departments and oversee the production of promotional programs and materials. The DC is a master at developing and promoting positive stories that elevate staff voices, student accomplishments and spotlight the exceptional opportunities for SPS students.
- Lead the development and execution of communications strategies during emergencies or crises.
- Craft and deploy formal/rapid notifications using a wide variety of tools, to parents and community.
- Manage the communications department staff including the Communications Specialist and the Web Administrator.
- Develop proactive communication strategies in collaboration with district leaders to serve internal and external audiences.
- Create high-quality materials, including written documents, speeches, visual designs, and advertising campaigns.
- Promote community engagement while expanding partnerships with families, businesses and organizations.
- Develop, increase, and improve the opportunities for participation, input and feedback of all shareholders.
- React positively to change and work under deadline pressure.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of communications tools and incorporate innovative ideas and techniques.
General Responsibilities:
- Oversee the production and distribution of news releases; handle all crisis communications arranging for press conferences as required; and provide other information for reporters.
- Oversee the district’s website and social media channels, ensuring they are current, engaging, and compliant with accessibility standards.
- Monitor online platforms to address concerns, correct misinformation, and enhance the district's reputation.
- Coordinate awards and recognition programs for staff, students, and volunteers.
- Develop resources and tools to assist schools in effectively communicating with stakeholders.
- Maintain consistent branding and messaging across all district communications platforms.
- Develop marketing materials, including brochures, videos, and promotional campaigns, to support district initiatives.
- Manage the communications team, including hiring, training, and evaluating staff.
- Oversee external vendors and contractors for communications-related projects.
- Lead the development of annual objectives for the district's communication and marketing programs and plan budget for meeting objectives.
- Serve as the district’s Freedom of Information Officer managing requests for public records.
- Assist Superintendent with the development of legislative advocacy materials and plans.
- Serve as a member of the district’s Executive Team and attend district meetings, including board meetings.
- Speak at public meetings on issues of general or specific pertinence to district schools and programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
- Office environment with occasional travel to school sites and community events.
- Availability to respond to emergencies outside of regular business hours.
- Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
- Requires Physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
- Requires stooping, bending, and reaching.
- Occasionally works in noisy and crowded environments.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism, mass communications, or related field of study.
- Direct workforce experience in external communications, news reporting, media relations, or public relations in an agency, media outlet or corporate environment.
- Demonstrated skills:
- Understanding of public education systems and their stakeholders.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proven ability to manage crisis communications and media relations.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in digital communications tools, including content management systems and social media platforms.
Education and Experience:
Required: Bachelors degree in related field plus 5 years leadership/supervisory experience.
Preferred: Masters degree in related field.

Pay: $103,817.00 - $124,024.00 per year
