What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bioscience/Breeding/Genetics research assistant position at USDA-ARS at Fargo, ND on NDSU campus?
We are looking for motivated individuals to join our great USDA-ARS Sugarbeet Research team located at Fargo, ND.
The opened position is a one-year term and will assist scientists to develop new sugarbeet lines with improved disease/insect resistance through new biotechnology, such as using haploid/doubled haploid technique to accelerate breeding process, efficient selection through molecular markers, speed breeding by combining conditions of greenhouse, lab and off-season field, etc.
Mainly work on:
1) laboratory work: ovule culture to induce haploid tissue and then regenerate to haploid plants and doubled haploids. DNA and RNA extraction for marker and gene expression analysis. Sugarbeet quality test such as sucrose content, metal ion, and root tissue property.
2) Seed production: seed germination, repotting plants and growing in greenhouse, plant isolation to prevent pollen contamination, and harvest and thresh seeds.
3) Field work: thinning plants, sampling leaf tissues and insects, and more outdoor activities.
No pre-work experience required but the applicant should be eligible for working in the USA.
