What are the responsibilities and job description for the Claims Examiner-Personal Lines position at USLI?
Essential Functions:
- Confirm coverage by reviewing the first notice of loss, assessing all available systems, and interpreting policy language.
- Prepare initial coverage position letters, including disclaimers and reservations of rights.
- Conduct thorough and focused claim investigations once coverage is confirmed. This includes gathering all relevant facts, statements, and documents, identifying joint tortfeasors and witnesses, and performing scene investigations.
- Establish, review, and maintain reserves throughout the claim’s lifecycle to accurately reflect potential exposure based on liability and damage evaluations.
- Manage claim files proactively, ensuring timely progression toward resolution through diary management, strategic direction to defense counsel and independent adjusters, and negotiation of settlements or preparation for trial.
- Maintain comprehensive and substantive claim notes documenting all file activity.
- Communicate effectively throughout the claims process, including drafting detailed authority requests, reinsurance reports, serious loss reports, and coverage position letters, while coordinating with underwriting and actuarial teams.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide exceptional customer service by responding promptly—within the same day—to internal and external phone calls and emails while adhering to established claims service standards.
- Participate in special projects as assigned.
- Engage in continuing education to maintain state licensing and support professional and personal development, as outlined in the annual Individual Development Plan.
- Travel occasionally to attend mediations, court hearings, and other necessary proceedings.

Minimum Job Requirements:
We are seeking candidates with:
- 2 years of experience (Associate Claim Examiner) or 7 years of experience (Claim Examiner) in handling general liability, casualty, or excess claims, including prior roles as an examiner, adjuster, paralegal, or other relevant positions.
- Preferred qualifications include experience in personal lines, multi-jurisdictional knowledge, and advanced degrees such as a JD.
