About the Role
We are seeking a dynamic and innovative Claims Examiner to join our team. The ideal candidate is an analytical and creative problem-solver who can quickly identify key issues related to coverage, liability, and damage evaluation. Essential Functions:
- Coverage Verification: Review the first notice of loss and policy information to confirm coverage. Prepare initial coverage position letters, including disclaimers and reservations of rights.
- Claim Investigation: Once coverage is confirmed, conduct a thorough investigation to assess liability and damages. Apply relevant statutory and case law to determine exposure, identify joint tortfeasors, and ensure equitable responsibility.
- Reserve Management: Establish and adjust reserves as the claim develops, ensuring they accurately reflect ultimate exposure based on liability and damage evaluations.
- File Management & Negotiation: Maintain proactive file management using an effective diary. Negotiate directly with claimants or their attorneys, oversee defense counsel to ensure effective litigation management, and review/approve settlement agreements. Document all claim activities in substantive file notes.
- Reporting: Prepare clear, comprehensive reports, including reserve authority requests, reinsurance reports, serious loss reports, and coverage position letters, and share updates with underwriting and other departments.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Customer Service: Provide prompt responses (within the same day) to phone calls and emails from both internal and external stakeholders, in line with established claim service promises.
- Special Projects & Continuous Learning: Participate in special projects as needed. Enroll in continuing education to maintain state licenses and support professional and personal development per the annual Individual Development Plan.
- Travel: Occasional travel for mediations, court hearings, or other claim-related meetings.
Specific Skills:
