What are the responsibilities and job description for the Employment Practices-Claims Examiner position at USLI?
The ideal claims team member will be an analytical and creative problem solver with the ability to hone in on key issues for coverage, liability and damage evaluation. Our claim examiners are assertive decision makers with a strong desire to persuade through negotiation and conflict management. The claims team offers on going challenges, even for the most experienced professional, as every claim is unique, providing new opportunities to learn and grow. We welcome our ongoing interaction with underwriting, compliance and actuarial to keep our products healthy.
Claim Examiners play a critical role in evaluating and managing claims by:
- Confirming coverage through a detailed review of the first notice of loss and policy information.
- Drafting and issuing coverage position letters, including disclaimers and reservations of rights.
- Conducting thorough claim investigations to assess liability and damages.
- Applying statutory and case law to determine liability exposure.
- Identifying joint tortfeasors and ensuring equitable distribution of financial responsibility.
- Maintaining and adjusting reserves to accurately reflect ultimate exposure based on liability and damage assessments.
- Proactively managing claim files through an effective diary system, direct negotiations with claimants or attorneys, and oversight of defense counsel to ensure litigation aligns with company guidelines.
- Reviewing and approving settlements, ensuring compliance with company policies and industry standards.
- Maintaining comprehensive file documentation that accurately reflects all claim activity.
- Preparing detailed reports, including reserve authority requests, reinsurance reports, serious loss reports, coverage position letters, and communications for underwriting and other departments.
Additional Responsibilities
- Providing exceptional customer service by responding to internal and external phone calls and emails within the same business day while adhering to established claim service commitments.
- Completing special projects as assigned.
- Participating in continuing education to maintain state licenses and support professional and personal growth in alignment with the Individual Development Plan.
- Occasional travel may be required for mediations and court hearings.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong understanding of legal concepts, litigation processes, and agency filings.
- Exceptional communication skills (both oral and written).
- Analytical mindset with the ability to assess complex claims and develop strategic solutions.
- Effective negotiation skills to drive favorable claim resolutions.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities to manage multiple claims effectively.
- Technical expertise in insurance coverage, employment law, and claim evaluation.
Minimum Requirements
- Associate Claim Examiner: 2 years of relevant experience.
- Claim Examiner: 7 years of relevant experience.
- Background in liability claims handling, including prior roles as an examiner, adjuster, paralegal, or attorney/lawyer.

Salary Range:Associate Claims Examiner: $65K - $95K; Claims Examiner: $85K - $115K
Position affords 5 days per month to work remotely.
