The Exhibits Graphic Designer works within the Exhibit department and focuses exclusively on the creation of graphics for internal museum use—such as interpretive panels, labels, educational visuals, and wayfinding signage. These materials support exhibits and the visitor experience by enhancing learning, clarity, and engagement. This is not a marketing or promotional design role.
The ideal candidate has a strong eye for visual and layout design and understands how to communicate ideas in an accessible and visually appealing way to support the museum’s mission through thoughtful design.
Status: Casual Part-time, non-exempt, 20 hours per week.
Schedule: Monday to Wednesday, 20 Hours per week. Onsite.
Pay Range: $25.00 per hour. The museum is not able to offer compensation outside of this posted range.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Create wayfinding and informational signage to support visitor orientation and accessibility.
- Design and produce exhibit graphics including interpretive text panels, labels, educational visuals, timelines, and infographics.
- Prepare press-ready files and oversee production of graphic materials (printing, mounting, installation).
- Collaborate with the exhibits team to ensure graphics align with exhibition goals and design standards.
- Ensure consistency in brand identity and visual language across all exhibit-related materials.
- Maintain organized project files and document design processes.
- Stay updated on design trends, emerging technologies, and industry best practices to bring innovative ideas to the team.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Education/Experience:
- High School Diploma, Associate’s degree in media or design, preferred.
- Two years of graphic design experience.
- Familiarity with museum exhibit design and educational interpretation is a plus.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in MS Office Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, Teams or other meeting tool.
- Advanced skills in graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and multimedia tools.
- Advanced knowledge of video editing software and 3D modeling tools.
- Expert in design principles, color theory, and typography.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage a team, and meet deadlines.
- Familiarity with current design trends and a creative mindset.
- Ability to work with and for volunteers.

Working Conditions:
- Job conditions and work location: Work is performed aboard the USS Midway in former administrative offices restored to primary working conditions.
- Physical requirements: Sit for long periods. Climb up and down stairs, bending, stooping, and lifting to move and retrieve materials, pulling and pushing, lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, and reaching above and below shoulder height.
- Equipment operated: General office equipment, large-format printer, plotter, vinyl cutter, laminators, and knives, as well as handheld radio.
