VDOT's Bristol District is seeking a motivated individual to become our next Bridge Superintendent for the Russell/Buchanan Bridge Crew. In this role, you will be responsible for managing, planning, and directing operations and staff involved in structure and bridge repair, maintenance, and replacement activities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Establishing schedules, planning, and monitoring work activities.
- Ensuring all work activities are performed safely, following workplace safety protocols and guidelines.
- Identifying maintenance and repair needs for structures and bridges, while developing project budgets and cost estimates.
- Managing day-to-day operations, including assigning tasks, complying with environmental regulations, handling administrative duties, and responding to customer concerns.
- Setting work goals and monitoring performance.
- Overseeing the placement of temporary bridges and the removal of damaged structures.
- Supervising snow removal operations.
This position is designated as essential, meaning all duties must be performed during emergencies, including but not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and other critical operations. As a result, you may be required to work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as determined by VDOT.

Minimum Qualifications
- Considerable knowledge of structure and bridge maintenance methods, procedures,
- Knowledge of supervisory principles, policies and practices and experience to manage
- Knowledge of budgets, cost estimates, and inventory management.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
- Ability to effectively resolve citizen complaints and other issues successfully.
- Ability to gather data, conduct research, and create reports and correspondence.
- Ability to schedule, plan, and monitor work activities.
- Ability to read and interpret bridge and structure plans and specifications.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Valid driver's license.

- Experience preparing cost estimates, developing budgets, tracking costs, and preparing
- Experience in maintenance and construction of bridges, culverts, and other highway
- Experience managing performance and applying progressive discipline.
- Experience developing, planning, scheduling, and overseeing construction or bridge
