Description of Job: This individual will join VBS’s Synthetic Biology Hub (SBH) and contribute to internal metabolic engineering efforts, especially in the field of strain engineering and automation. Responsible for the development of strains and molecular biology tools to serve current and future engineering programs. These programs occur in a variety of host microbial organisms, including prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and drive development of biorational products in agriculture as well as additional synthetic biology projects in other Sumitomo Chemical business sectors. Additionally, this role will support automation of synthetic biology workflows to streamline operations within the Synthetic Biology group. This position will report to the Manager of Synthetic Biology.
Principal Responsibilities:
PhD in Synthetic Biology, Systems Biology, Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering, or other related field with 3 years of industry experience.
Travel:
Limited travel will be required. (<5%)

Principal Responsibilities:
- Act as a scientific lead to drive internal metabolic engineering projects and achievement of program milestones.
- Work closely with bioinformatician to support laboratory automation efforts to improve efficiency, lead time, throughput, and accuracy of the SBH’s processes.
- Coordinate and conduct all work in strict compliance with applicable safety requirements, containment requirements, standard operating practices, and/or guidelines.
- Track record of achievement in the use of metabolic engineering techniques in an industrial setting to generate improved strains and processes.
- Proficient in the use of modern molecular gene editing and assembly tools.
- Able to handle and engineer model or non-model bacterial and/or fungal hosts.
- Experience of scripting and validating workflows on automation platforms (epMotion, Tecan, Hamilton, or equivalent).
- Passion for the expanding field of synthetic biology, especially as it relates to the development of novel products and sustainable solutions.
- Experience in modern scripting/programming languages (Python, R, or other), shell scripting, relational databases (SQL), and distributed cloud computing environments (AWS) is a plus.
- Works well in teams, especially with synthetic biology group members but also across other research department functions.
- Strong communication, presentation and listening skills.
- Will foster a culture of diversity and inclusion.
- Self-starter with strong project management and organization skills.
