ABOUT THE ROLE
The Superintendent is responsible for utilizing resources effectively and for planning, organizing, supervising, and directing the daily activities, safety, and schedules of personnel appointed to Valley project sites.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
  • Serves as first point of contact for project on site. Acts as a liaison between external superintendents, project managers, project engineers and foremen. Maintains open communications with all parties involved in project, including customer, general contractor representatives, foremen, project manager, and safety personnel/officials.
  • Develops strong relationships, encourages, and seeks opportunities for collaborative efforts, seeks understanding of issues, anticipates and troubleshoots problems, and resolves urgent and ongoing matters affecting the timely and safe completion of project.
  • Establishes status update schedule with customer in collaboration with the Project Manager at beginning of project and adjusts timing as necessary in order to maintain customer’s confidence and ensure customer remains abreast of project progress.
  • Interacts with internal and external safety professionals to ensure compliance with all safety requirements. Coordinates safety training efforts with appropriate personnel.
  • Achieves outcomes by managing multiple priorities and effectively holding others accountable for results. Completes project plans by scheduling and assigning personnel, accomplishing work results, establishing priorities, monitoring progress, developing, and revising schedules, resolving problems, and reporting results.
  • Acquires and discusses plans, directions, supplies, resources, materials, and schedules with Foremen; confers with Foremen, Project Manager, Warehouse Manager, vendors, and/or others on manpower, vendor issues, costs, budgetary matters, material/tool/equipment delivery schedules and storage, change orders, requests for information, and project needs. Shares information and seeks to troubleshoot any issue in advance of effect on the project. Keeps management apprised of situations creating potential delays or risk management issues. Seeks approval from Operations Manager for approval of large purchases.
  • Addresses customer concerns with Project Manager and General Contractor and may participate in providing information back to originating party.
  • Inspects work progress, activities, and project site routinely to verify proper fulfillment of project specifications, manpower/scheduling needs, safety and quality standards, and cost containment measures. Completes daily or other reporting of progress in accordance with contractor requirements.
  • Remains alert to potential or escalating morale issues, personnel problems, or safety concerns through direct observation or through communication with Foremen. Maintains trust with field staff and works with union stewards and trade foremen to maximize efficiency and address morale concerns.
  • Reviews project costs and responds to inquiries regarding cost or financial variances.
  • Collaborates with Project Manager when changes or deviations from the original specifications are required on site, approves amendments or adjustments to be made, and relays information concerning such variations to involved parties.
  • Fully understands job specifications and drawings and serves as a resource on best practices, installation/ construction methodology, and project expectations.
  • Maintains oversight of project milestones and ensures productivity needs are being met.
  • Assists with the preservation of equipment reliability and utility through monitoring of preventative equipment maintenance routines and prioritization of repairs.
  • Emphasizes and reflects “safety first” attitude in all dealings with personnel and subcontractors, assists with safety audits, assists Foremen with completion of injury reports and safety plans, investigates causes of accidents as needed, and follows up with corrective actions or with injured workers as directed. Collaborates with safety professionals to ensure placement, drug-testing, and orientation of certified, qualified, and trained field staff.
  • Assists Foremen in the assessment of field staff skill level to determine apprenticeship categories and pay rates.
  • Coordinates activities among the various site trade specialties and assists in resolving differences or conflicts that may arise. Collaborates with union officials to assist with manpower needs, removal of employees, and testing of apprentice employees to determine skill levels.
  • Drives and instills the corporate culture, on all assigned projects, to ensure employees are aligned with and living the corporate culture, mission, vision, and values.
  • Serves as a positive role model in all contacts in order to support and maintain Valley reputation.
  • Conducts or participates in daily meetings to discuss priorities, debrief, or anticipate production or personnel issues, schedules, deadlines, or other matters needing attention.
  • Supports Valley Interior Systems’ leadership team through effective management practices and positive contributions to the Valley mission, values, projects, and objectives.
WHO YOU ARE
  • Experience: Construction background, with drywall and union experience preferred. Experience leading groups preferred.
  • Education: Highschool diploma required; college and/or field experience preferred.
  • Computer Skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Reasoning and Development: Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form; deal with problems involving several concrete variables and excellent grasp of process management.
  • Mathematical Development: Ability to add, subtract, and divide all units of measure. Ability to compute percentages, interest, profit and loss; basic statistics, ability to read and use graphs/charts and general algebra.
  • Language Development: Ability to read technical manuals and reports, workplace rules and procedures; speak with poise and confidence, using correct English. Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical requirements are those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations:
  • The physical demands of this position require the ability to communicate orally and in writing, hear at a conversational level, use both hands, distinguish depth, and operate a motor vehicle.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will frequently (34-66% time on job) be required to sit, use fingers. Occasionally (6-33% time on job) the employee will be required to stand, walk, grip with pressure, and twist or bend wrists. Infrequently (2-5% time on job) the employee may be required to climb up to 5 flights of stairs, carry 10 lbs. up to 10 ft., and keep wrists and feet in prolonged positions of flexion or extension. Rarely (1% time on the job or less) the employee will be required to stoop, balance, kneel, crawl, reach, repeatedly bend, perform hand over hand pulling, twist while rotating the torso, climb ladders up to 6 ft., pull 5 lbs. up to 5 ft., push 10 lbs. up to 10 ft., lift up to 35 lbs., and use hand and foot controls.
