Job Description


Vance County Fire Department is currently recruiting motivated individuals for part time Firefighters to work with the Vance County Fire Department Monday – Sunday either 12 hour or 24 hour shifts beginning at 0700 hours or 1900 hours. Employees are required to work a minimum 24 hours per month.

JOB SUMMARY
The Fire Engineer serves as a part time Firefighter and/or Fire Engineer with Vance County Fire Department working at the main station and/or sub-station as assigned. The employee provides response to fires and EMS calls operating all necessary fire and first responder equipment for suppression and EMS related incidents. This position is responsible for daily assignments apparatus building and equipment maintenance fire prevention pre—incident planning training and other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Responds to alarms and participates in incidence response including firefighting operations driving and operation of fire apparatus including pumpers aerial apparatus and other equipment as required; responds and participates in remediation activities of chemical spills hazardous materials and other related incidents; responds to emergency medical incidents and provides EMT Basic services; responds and provides technical rescue services. Drives apparatus to incident scene; properly places apparatus to establish water supply or other needs; insures proper operation and pressure of hoses; issues equipment and monitors radio traffic for necessary response; returns fire apparatus and related equipment to service after incident response. Inspects station and equipment for proper appearance and condition. Performs maintenance and cleaning of fire apparatus equipment station building hydrants hose lines and related facilities equipment and supplies. Assists with the preparation fire reports; participates in special projects as required. Participates in in-service training programs. Participates in fire prevention and public education programming and pre-incident surveys. Participates in mechanical maintenance and repair of apparatus and other equipment. Performs special assignments or projects requiring the leadership or coordination of others such as SCBA maintenance and repair radio equipment maintenance and repair; building maintenance hydrant maintenance hose line testing and maintenance etc. Participates in preparation and maintenance of records and incident reports. Acts in the absence of the Captain to lead the shift at an assigned station. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Education and Experience:

Firefighter:

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of related experience as a firefighter; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

Firefighter:

  • Possession of North Carolina Firefighter Level I / II certification (Minimum NFPA 1403 classes completed; no exceptions).
  • Possession of North Carolina Hazardous Materials Level I certification.
  • Possession of North Carolina Medical Responder or EMT-Basic certification (No Exceptions).
  • Ability to obtain North Carolina Firefighter Level I / II with twelve (12) months of hire.

Special Requirements:

Firefighter:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age at time of hire.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen; criminal and driving record check.
  • Must be able to work long hours and shift work.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment Details


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy work which requires work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; including the human body. Tasks may require the following abilities: climbing; balancing; stooping; kneeling; crouching; crawling; reaching; pushing; pulling; lifting; grasping; feeling; talking; and hearing. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes; the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have the visual acuity to size up the color; volume; and extent of fire involvement at fire scenes; to operate heavy fire apparatus in emergency situations; and to prepare records and reports.



WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety precautions; work demands considerable heavy effort that is intense in nature. The employee is subject to hazards in fire services work including working in both inside and outside environmental conditions; extreme temperatures; hazardous fumes; dusts; odors; mists; and gases and working in close quarters. Work may expose the employee to human blood or body fluids and thus the job is subject to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens.
