Tech Transfer Summer Internship - Undergraduate Finance

Vanderbilt University
Nashville, TN Intern
POSTED ON 3/29/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 4/27/2025

Interested in start-up, entrepreneurship, and innovative tech? Join an innovative, dynamic summer internship program launched collaboratively by the Office of Technology Transfer and the Center for Entrepreneurship. This program brings together an interdisciplinary team of one MBA student and two undergraduate students (for finance and marketing roles) to evaluate promising university-developed technologies. Over the summer, interns will perform detailed due diligence and subsequently create comprehensive plans—financial, marketing, and commercialization—to turn selected technologies into viable startups.

This opportunity is ideal for undergraduate students excited about finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, startups, and those eager to approach challenges creatively and think differently.

*This position is only available for Vanderbilt Undergraduate students*

The following apply for the undergraduate finance intern

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct detailed expense research and build financial models for early-stage ventures.
  • Assist in selecting business models and creating revenue projections.
  • Research venture capital dynamics relevant to early-stage startups and prepare insightful summaries.
  • Develop and manage organized data rooms for investor due diligence purposes.
  • Create and refine dynamic financial models driven by defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Assist in the preparation and structuring of capitalization tables and equity incentive plans.
  • Perform compensation plan benchmarking and comparative analysis.
  • Evaluate technology stacks, including cost-benefit analyses to support financial planning.
  • Research and identify potential grant opportunities, evaluating suitability and alignment with venture needs.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in finance, economics, accounting, business administration, or a closely related field.
  • Basic understanding of finance and economics concepts; coursework in financial modeling, accounting, or entrepreneurship is preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel for financial modeling or other analytical work.
  • Strong analytical skills with an ability to interpret financial data and perform critical analysis.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and enthusiasm for exploring unconventional solutions.
  • Past internship experience in banking or finance preferred but not required

Don’t have all the above qualifications? Still apply! You will be working with a current MBA student with experience in financial modeling/metrics who can help get you up to speed during the orientation process. We value creative thinking and an entrepreneurial spirit more than direct finance experience!

Why Apply:

  • Gain hands-on experience in venture finance and entrepreneurial finance strategies.
  • Work directly with MBA-level mentors and university innovation leaders.
  • Develop practical skills in financial due diligence, financial modeling, and early-stage venture strategy.
  • Contribute to shaping the early strategy of university-developed technologies with significant potential.

Application Instructions: Interested students should submit a resume and a brief, one paragraph description of themselves. Selected applicants will receive an additional questionnaire, followed by an in-person interview. We plan on hiring by April 21st

The program will run from May 12th-August 12th, with a one-week break from June 30-July 7.  Compensation is $5,000/month. Undergraduates will each receive a $2500 bonus if they help the team win the pitch competition at the end of the summer.

Salary : $5,000
