Chief Architect, FAS Technology

Financial Advisor Services (FAS) is one of Vanguard's four client-facing business divisions. FAS provides investments, services, education, and research to more than 55,000 advisory teams representing more than $3 trillion in assets. Vanguard's financial advisor clients include broker-dealers, asset managers, bank trust departments, registered investment advisors, and insurance companies. 

We are seeking an experienced, innovative, and influential Chief Technology Architect to drive the strategic technology direction for our FAS division. In this role you will guide the organization by helping us complete our cloud native modernization along with defining the target state architecture for FAS 3.0. You will create, communicate, and drive our architecture strategy, technical direction, and governance processes across the subdivision ensuring best of breed technology patterns and governance are applied to our technology portfolio. This role will also collaborate across senior IT and business stakeholders ensuring we are setup to continue driving business value through innovation in our technology portfolio.

Core Responsibilities

1. Establishes and maintains strategic relationships with key partners and business leaders to define business requirements and processes, make recommendations, and lead the in shaping of future product architecture and roadmaps

2. Leads the definition of product roadmaps and architecture across multiple product families, according to business strategies and enterprise architecture

3. Collaborates with the broader architecture community to ensure that their products align with target architectures and technology roadmaps and provides input on required platform capabilities and improving development tools/processes

4. Works with other product teams, technology experts, and business stakeholders to provide functional support

5. Assists in the evaluation of vendors and products and participates in build vs. buy discussions with the product teams

6. Acts as highest level technical expert, resolving issues, assessing any potential risks and identifying solutions across the portfolio

7. Leads the discussions related to key product architecture decisions. Identifies new opportunities to improve products and provide input and support to the business

8. Develops and reviews product architecture and design documentation

9. Provides technical guidance to product team(s) as appropriate

10. Performs feasibility analysis on potential future projects

11. Assists in the development of and leads architecture governance process(es)

12. Tracks industry trends and maintains knowledge of new technologies

13. Mentors less experienced crew members and contributes to overall development of the organization

14. Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

Role Specific Responsibilities:
        1. Set comprehensive technology strategy supporting FAS 3.0
        2. Create and own multi-year technology roadmap in support of FAS and IT vision and strategy
        3. Keep abreast of new technologies and best practices, educate the subdivision on relevant trends, and support development & product teams with implementation of new concepts
        4. Recommend improvements to FAS tech stack, process, and coding practices
        5. Coach architects and tech leads across the subdivision to improve engineering excellence
        6. Oversee Domain and Product architectures ensuring adherence to enterprise security, resiliency, cost, and architectural patterns
        7. Own FAS architecture Forums, Operating Model, Role Definitions, and Calibration
        8. Represent FAS in Senior Technology Forums (ie TTOT, Emerging Tech, CDAO)

Qualifications

• Minimum of eight years related work experience, with at least three years of technology architect experience.
• Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. Graduate degree preferred.
