SummaryThe Dual-ended Medical Sources Engineering group at Varex Imaging produces high quality innovative X-Ray imaging tubes for various medical imaging applications. We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic summer intern to help our engineering team analyze ball bearings from failed products. You will be working with an engineer who oversees bearing performance for the entire product line and a tech who currently helps in the analysis. Work will involve receiving the failed product, logging it into a database and follow a workflow to measure/evaluate quality metrics and image the failed parts. Update database and provide regular updates on status of parts that are being analyzed. You may also be required to assist in other sound and vibration measurements that evaluate x-ray tube quality.Job DescriptionYou will work closely with a DE engineer and collaborate with the DE and production teams in general.
- Learn X-Ray and lab safety procedures
- Receive failed parts and enter them in a database for tracking
- Follow an established workflow to analyze the failed part at various assembly levels. Work with the machine shop and various techs to measure and disassemble the assembly and measure necessary metrics
- Image the failed bearing assembly per work-instructions
- Record the measured data and add link to the images in the database
- Set up and measure sound and vibration of x-ray tubes to evaluate their health metrics
Skills - What you will bring:
PROVID bulleted list of specific skills and attributes needed to succeed;
- Familiarity with ball bearings and their design & function
- Basic mechanical analysis and hands-on skills - must be able to assemble and disassemble bearings without damaging critical components
- Mechanical design skills - ability to conceptualize and design simple fixtures
- Lab skills - ability to operate lab equipment, use lab fixtures and understand/follow work instructions
- Knowledge of basic photography (use of digital camera and exposure controls)
Additional Advantageous Skills:
- Familiarity with dry-film/solid-lubricated ball bearings and vacuum tribology
- Metallography, surface characterization and associated imaging techniques
- Metrology
- Knowledge of dynamics and rotating equipment behavior
- Noise and vibration measurement procedures - vibration spectrum analysis and characterization
- Programming skills - Python, VBA, Access/SQL or other
Minimum Education:
- 2 years of mechanical engineering coursework.
- Must have completed core mechanical design courses
