PURPOSE
The Sr Paralegal in the Development Department plays a crucial role in supporting the development and legal team with a wide range of tasks related to real estate development, litigation, insurance, CAM reconciliations and other development-related legal matters.
This position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have experience in real estate law, litigation, are comfortable with accounting, due diligence, and other legal processes related to development projects.
DELIVERABLES
The deliverables for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Key Responsibilities
Risk Management
- Determine appropriate coverage to protect VASA's interests.
- Manage Insurance filings for litigation and potential litigation.
- Comply with lease requirements for property insurance and auditing Landlord's insurance.
- Obtain Certificates of Insurance for new and existing locations.
Document Preparation & Filing
- Prepare responses to EEOC charges by working with HR and Operations.
- Assist in drafting, reviewing, and editing legal documents, including amendments and cease and desist letters, and correspondence related to development projects, existing leases and litigation.
- Maintain and organize legal files, ensuring that all documents related to litigation are properly filed and accessible.Track key milestones and keep all relevant parties informed on the progress of legal matters.
CAM, Tax and Insurance Reconciliations
- Validate landlord's CAM bills and contest, if necessary, based on lease documents.
- Validate landlord's Tax bills and contest, if necessary, based on lease documents.
- Validate landlord's Insurance bills and contest, if necessary, based on lease documents.
Client & Stakeholder Communication
- Liaise with internal teams (e.g., development, construction, operations and human resources) to gather necessary documentation and ensure smooth coordination of legal processes.
- Communicate with external parties, including opposing counsel, government agencies, to ensure that all legal requirements are met, and deadlines are adhered to.
General Administrative Support
- Manage and maintain calendars, schedules, and deadlines for legal matters related to development projects.
- Prepare status updates and reports for senior counsel and other stakeholders in the Legal Department, if necessary
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor's degree in almost any field or associate degree in paralegal studies, legal studies, or related field. Paralegal certification (e.g., NALA or NFPA) preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a paralegal, preferably in real estate, development, litigation, or a related legal field.
- Experience with real estate transactions and litigation is highly desirable.
- Working knowledge of insurance.
- Working knowledge of leases and accounting for leases.
Skills
- Strong understanding of real estate law, and basic litigation.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and legal document management software.
- Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and work under deadlines.
- Attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with insurance.
- Basic accounting skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Primary work in a fitness facility and office setting. Temperature variations can occur. The environment includes some ambient noise such as talking and the use of gym equipment and machinery.
Hybrid work options are available.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS
- Talking: Especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Physical Strength: Non-Sedentary work, standing and walking most of the time. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to deal with a variety of variables under limited standardization. Able to interpret various instructions and relay instructions to clients
- Attendance is an essential duty of the position. Employees must work regularly scheduled shifts, during business hours to assist members and sell services in-person.
