JOB TITLE: Behavior Intervention Assistant
STATUS: Full-Time, 195 Work Days per year
REPORTS TO: Behavior Lead Technician
PROGRAM: School-Wide (K-12)
Organization Overview
Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent. Vaughn operates five contiguous campuses under one charter.
Position Overview
Under the direction and supervision of the Behavior Lead Technician, the Behavior Intervention Assistant will support students with behavioral needs. This is a full-time position that serves school-wide grades K-12.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide behavior management intervention services.
- Prevent and de-escalate harmful/disruptive behaviors
- Implement crisis intervention strategies
- Implement differential reinforcement and extinction procedures
- Conduct certain types of assessments (e.g. stimulus preference assessments) as assigned by Behavior Lead Technician
- Assist in collecting and recording behavioral data to track student progress
- Report student progress and make recommendations to the behavior team
- Provide and track services in a timely and accurate manner
- Collaborate with support and school staff to develop, implement, and modify behavior intervention plans
- Attend ongoing trainings as assigned
- Maintain confidentiality at all times
- Additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Possess a High School Diploma, and Pass a local assessment of knowledge and skills test or 48 college
- semesters or an A.A degree or higher
- Must have a minimum of 1-year experience as a classroom
- paraprofessional, special education assistant, behavior intervention, or adult assistant.
Desirable Skills/Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology, or related field preferred
- Experience with working in a team atmosphere
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Two or more years of experience in providing behavioral intervention or behavior management
- services to mild to severe individuals
- Interest in the fields of psychology, mental health, behavior management, special education, sociology,
- or any closely related field
- Ability to perform physical activities that may involve strength, flexibility, and balance
Compensation and Benefits
- $21.00 - $25.00/hr. (No Degree); $26.00 - $30.00/hr. (w/Bachelor's Degree) (FY 24-25)
- Full-time, non-exempt position (up to 35 hours)
- 195 days per year

Additional Information
Upon receiving an offer of employment:
- Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan) with the Department of Justice (DOJ)
- Must provide a Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) clearance within 60 days of employment
- Will be assigned mandated state training to be completed prior to the first day of employment
